“Tasha’s right there,” Lou said. “She can tell us what happened.”

“He thinks he can call me a woman scorned and get away with it,” Tasha explained as Lou holstered her weapon and moved to help her up. She knew exactly what was going through his head. “He knows I can’t let you kill him because we should get the intel he sold us out for, but he thinks he’ll be able to negotiate. He’s thinking the Agency will call it a he-said, she-said and wash its hands. After all, Mike’s dead, and so is Zach.”

Kala snorted. “Zach’s not dead. He’s a tough motherfucker. Not only did he manage to write Chet’s name in his own blood in case he didn’t make it, he was halfway down the hallway when the police found him. I’m not messing with Zach anymore. He had a hole in his chest and was still making his way to the elevator. From what we understand all he kept saying was that they had to save Tasha. He’s in surgery, according to Tristan. We’ll have plenty of ways to send your ass to jail.”

Relief flooded Tasha’s system. Zach wasn’t dead. They hadn’t taken the time to make sure because they’d heard the sirens. Her team had saved him. Zach could still make it, and she would do anything she could to help him find the future he deserved. “You are so lucky, Chet. The fact that he’s not dead might save you.”

Kala looked her way. “Seriously, you’re not going to let me kill him? That seems like such a waste. I have good bullets. If you want to keep it quiet, I have excellent knives.”

Tasha stretched her arms, the circulation starting to flow like fire in her veins. “I want to know what Oakley was sending him. He said something about information on the Canadian. I want to know if he’s talking about Huisman or Ben.”

Kala grimaced. “So I have to choose between the deep satisfaction of murdering Chet or the potential joy of finding out Ben’s a terrible piece of shit and holding that over Kenzie’s head for all of time. It’s a hard choice.”

“It’s not.” Lou was always reasonable. “You can kill Chet later. I’ll help. I got some great cleaning tips this afternoon. Those guys really know what they’re doing.”

Tasha turned to her ex. “What do you say? Should I let my sister pick your fate? Or do you want to tell me where they’re going to meet with Dare? You might have a shot at the Agency not wanting to put you in jail. They might just fire you.”

Not that her father would let that stand, but she wasn’t about to mention that. Her parents wouldn’t be satisfied with Chet being unemployed.

“If I tell you, you’ll turn me over?” Chet asked, his voice low and tight. The expression on his face was the one he got when he knew he’d been caught, a blank look that meant he was trying not to give away a single emotion.

“Yes.” She meant what she was saying. Her sister didn’t need more blood on her hands. “I promise. You tell me where they’re planning on meeting Dare and I’ll make sure you get back to the Agency in one piece. I won’t let my father or my sisters hurt you.”

“The field a half a mile behind the main house. He’s got a helo pad there. I think he plans to move Dare to another location. He thinks it’s clear enough that no one can sneak up on him, but your dad will likely have a long-range sniper rifle on him. There’s woods not a quarter of a mile away. They’re perfect to hide a sniper,” Chet admitted. “He wanted my opinion, and I told him it was a good meet spot.”

He’d planned this well, she had to admit it. Chet had set it up so there would be no one left to speak of his betrayal. He’d thought he’d killed Zach. He’d set it up so he did away with her himself, and then her father would take out Oakley and Chet would be in the wind, presumed innocent and in good with his bosses because he would have the intel they all wanted.

But she would be the one to walk away with the prize this time.

She nodded her sister’s way. “Deal with him. I don’t want to break a nail. I have a man to save, and I want to look good when I do it.”

Chet started to back up, but Kala was quick. She brought the SIG down on his head, and Chet crumpled to the ground.

“Are you sure I can’t take his balls like a prize of war?” Kala asked. “There’s a nice set of shears right over there. I bet they’re super sharp. I need some new jewelry.”
