“Are you trying to figure out what the guy’s last name is?”

Brian sent him a perfectly innocent look. “I already know it. Well, I did. I forgot it now. I’m feeling like a party. You’re going to be with Tasha. I’d like someone to hang out with.”

Or he wanted to check out all of Tasha’s family and friends to find a connection to… He wasn’t sure what. He was well aware there were corporate spies out there, but he wasn’t sure what they would want with him. It wasn’t like he kept top-secret research on his laptop. He had a lot of information, but it was all logistical and banking and legal work. He had overviews of all the projects they were funding, but most of that was available to the public.

He never would have thought Brian was a weird conspiracy theorist.

Or he had some damage he hadn’t talked about. Like Dare himself.

“Fine. But could you not let my girlfriend know you’re suspicious of her.”

A brow rose over Brian’s eyes. “Girlfriend?”

He was pretending for a while. “That’s what she is for the next two weeks.”

He had a contract and everything. They’d spent the time before his dinner going over soft and hard limits and banging out a basic contract, and then they’d just been banging.

He wanted to get her alone, but she’d mentioned she wouldn’t mind him spending some time with her sister. He got the feeling Tasha and Lou had to watch out for each other. And they’d come halfway across the world to spend time with their cousin. It didn’t seem fair to leave her out.

“I will be a perfect gentleman,” Brian vowed.

Sure he would. The doors opened and Dare started to walk out.

That was when he realized they weren’t alone on the floor.

A man in a ski mask held a gun in his hand. He pulled the trigger and fired.

Dare felt something hit him in the chest, heard a shout, and the world went dark around him.

Chapter Seven

“He’s gorgeous. Even more gorgeous in person than he was on screen.”

Kenzie was swooning over this afternoon’s encounter with Brian Peters. She’d won the war of who got to play “Kara” simply by waking up far earlier than her twin and being in the hotel before Kala could stop her.

They were all in one of the townhouse’s living areas, this one an open space that included the breakfast nook and the kitchen where Zach stood wearing a muscle shirt and looking irritated at the whole situation. “Don’t pull that shit again, Kenz. I know I said I would always keep your secrets, but this one is bullshit, and you do it again and I’ll call in the big guns.”

The entire team was here for what would likely be a hearty dressing down. Cooper paced by the kitchen bar. Lou was set up with a laptop at the table with Tristan, and Kala was sitting in the living room. No one but Kenz looked happy to be there, which let Tasha know Zach had been doing his growly thing.

Kenzie simply sighed. “My mom would understand.”

Their dad would not, and neither would their Agency liaisons.

Tasha looked over at her sister, who had thrown herself down on the couch in the living room and put a hand to her heart. She wasn’t sure how Kenzie managed to look like a Jane Austen heroine when she regularly took out the bad guys.

Tasha put down the small suitcase she’d carried down the stairs from the room she’d been sharing with Lou and gave her sister a frown. “You know he’s going to be confused. You didn’t act like the Kara he’s met before.”

And that was a serious problem. She’d spent the whole afternoon in Dare’s arms, and now she had to come back to reality. The minute she’d walked in the door, Zach had been all over her, detailing all the ways Kenzie had screwed things over.

Kenzie’s eyes stayed closed as though she was remembering every detail of her time with the ridiculously handsome Brian. “I was a very professional Kara.”

“You were horny-as-fuck Kara.” Kala frowned at her twin and then looked to Tasha. “I can’t believe you let her go down there.”

Tasha barely managed to not roll her eyes. “She was up and out of here at five a.m. I didn’t have a chance to stop her. I was sleeping. Like you.”

Cooper looked to Zach. “Aren’t you always awake?”

A slight flush stained the man’s cheeks. “I was out. For a run.”

Tasha rolled her eyes. “So he met someone and hadn’t done his walk of shame yet. Nice.”

“We need better security.” Kala put her back against the wall.

Tristan looked up. “We have excellent security. I knew the minute Zach walk of shamed right into this building. He missed Kenz by ten minutes. Cooper went for a run at five ten, and Kala didn’t even notice her sister was gone until after she snuck out to buy pastries that she didn’t bring back to share with the rest of us. That was rude.”
