“No, I don’t think it is.”
I picked my head up, and a smile crept across my face. “What if I don’t go alone, then?”
“That’s probably better, yeah.”
I nodded and stood up, feeling a rush of endorphins that usually preceded a great idea.
Or a really shitty one. Sometimes, it was a toss-up.
“Come with me.” I turned to Austin, the smile growing on my face. “We can get away from the bullshit and relax. Just for the weekend. It’ll be nice.”
“Is this your parents’ cabin? On Deer Lodge Road?”
“Yes…” I answered apprehensively. “We’ve been there together, haven’t we.”
“A few times,” Austin said. There seemed to be a spark growing in his eyes, his smile twitching wider, although I could have been projecting. “It was somewhere we could be completely alone together.”
I crossed my arms and leaned against the wall, licking my lips. “Let’s go, then. Let’s be alone together all over again.”
Austin filled his lungs with a breath. He looked out the window, blocking me from the smile I could hear in his voice. “Fine, yeah, I’ll go. I don’t have anything scheduled for this weekend. If I hear anything about Hank, then I could always drive back real quick.”
“Perfect,” I said, pushing off the wall and clapping my hands. “It’ll be fun. Like old times.”
“Just like old times.” And even though I really had no idea what exactly happened in those “old times,” I felt myself getting more and more excited to relive them. Austin’s gaze turned back my way. His square jaw and full lips caught a lone ray of sunshine that had dashed through a momentary break in the clouds. His skin seemed to glow gold for that fleeting moment before another heavy cloud drifted across the sky and cut off the spotlight. I tried not to think about how warm the room suddenly felt or how hard my heart started to beat.
My memory might have been complete dog shit, but I was positive I’d never felt like this for anyone before.
Well, maybe except for Austin.
“Was that all for the update on the case?” I asked, trying to get my thoughts back on track.
Austin nodded and readjusted himself in his chair. That was when a loud crack sounded through the tiny office, and before I could even blink, Austin dropped and hit the floor with a surprised grunt, the broken pieces of his chair surrounding him like shrapnel. The shock hadn’t worn off, but the laughter quickly started as I helped Austin up to his feet, kicking aside a snapped chair leg.
“You good?” I asked. Some dust colored the side of his dark pants. Without thinking, I leaned in and rubbed it clean.
“Thank you,” Austin said, still chuckling. “Yeah, I’m fine.” He looked down at the mess on the tiled floor. “I knew that was going to happen.”
“You don’t think it was someone trying to ‘finish the job,’ right?”
“No, it’s just Darien ordering us furniture from Toys ’R’ Us.”
We were laughing again and also standing close.
Really close.
The laughter died down, but the heat in the room didn’t. I could practically feel his breath on my face, feel his body against mine. I looked up into his hazel eyes, which looked emerald green in the moment, and I felt myself falling, as surely as Austin had just fell. Except mine wasn’t the fault of gravity or physics.
I was falling for an entirely different reason, and that reason was moving closer and closer to me, his hands on my hips now, his chest pressing against mine. Underneath his shirt, his muscles moved and twitched as he pushed me back against the wall, his eyes growing with the flames of need. Those same flames grew wild inside me, making the room even hotter, making me even hungrier.
“Kiss me, Austin,” I said, breathless, running my hands through his thick dark head of hair, steering his lips toward mine. I pushed my hips forward, not being shy about just how much I wanted Austin.
And when he pressed back onto me, I could tell he wasn’t being shy either.
My mouth started to water, and I broke from the kiss, needing more. This moment had been years in the making, and I wanted to milk it for every last drop.
Quite literally.
I started working on the buttons of his shirt, revealing a clean and tanned chest with a muscular chest I immediately wanted to drown in. I leaned in and kissed him, his skin soft against my lips. He moaned as I licked around his pebbled nipple, taking it between my teeth and sucking. I looked up, smiling as I moved to his other nipple. I kissed and sucked and nibbled, rubbing my hands up and down his chest, wrapping a hand around the back of his neck and coming back for a kiss.
I fucking loved having his tongue swirling around mine.
