It was too much—too much! Andi couldn’t take anymore of the intense pleasure/pain. There were fireworks exploding in front of her eyes and her breath was coming in short, desperate pants. The world was fading and she was fading with it.

I can’t faint, she thought, even as her consciousness flickered like a candle flame. I have to stay awake. Have to…

And then everything went black.

CADE

The breeding lust was on him and Cade felt satisfaction at finally getting his knot deep in his mate. Now she would be his forever! He bared his fangs, preparing to pierce her throat and inject his essence—only in that way could he Bond her to him—biting her as he filled her with his seed.

But I can’t Bond her—I can’t Bond any woman. I’m a Hybrid.

The suddenly lucid thought pierced the red haze of lust that had clouded his mind and Cade began to come back to himself. He blinked, looking around. There was a metal fence enclosing him and a ring of eager faces watching. Was this some kind of zoo? Where was he? Why was he naked? And oh Goddess—what was he doing?

Looking down, he saw Andrea lying under him. Her thighs were open and Cade saw to his bewilderment that he was inside her—all the way to the knot! He hadn’t knotted a female since his failed attempt at Bonding so many years ago—why was he doing it to Andrea now?

“Andrea? Are you all right?” he said hoarsely, shaking her shoulder.

To his horror, she was limp and unresponsive. Gods, what had he done to her?

As if in answer to his question, blurred and faded images began coming to his mind. He remembered being filled with a lustful fury—an anger so strong that he wanted to kill. Then Andrea, kneeling before him and baring her throat. Her eyes had been filled with fear. And then she had spread her legs and offered herself to him.

But not by choice—because she felt she had to, Cade thought grimly. Gods, had he just assaulted the female he had promised to protect? The woman he had loved from the first moment he saw her? He had sworn never to have Andrea because he couldn’t Bond her to him and now he had broken his vow to himself and hurt her in the worst way possible!

Not assaulted—assaulting—you’re still doing it. You’re still in her, a little voice in his head pointed out.

Cade felt sick. His knot was slowly going down so he must have come in her. But what had caused her to faint? Had he beaten her? He tried to access his spotty and faded memories and didn’t think he had hit her, but he had certainly taken her against her will. And he was beginning to think he had done it more than once. Flickering images filled his brain but he couldn’t pay attention to them now—he had to get himself and Andrea out of here—wherever here was.

At last his knot went down enough for him to withdraw. The gush of seed that followed let him know that he had done more than fuck her—he had bred Andrea and bred her hard. He felt sick.

“Andrea?” he murmured, turning her over so she lay on her back. “Andrea, I’m so fucking sorry. Please—come back to me, baby!”

At last her eyelids fluttered and her lovely eyes opened.

“Cade?” she whispered, and then her eyes widened in fright. “Please, don’t hurt me! I’ll give you anything you want—you’re my Protector, remember? Please, try to understand!”

Cade’s heart burned within him. He wanted to die.

“Andrea, it’s me,” he said, forcing the words out. “I don’t know what I did to you—I mean, I can guess but I don’t…I didn’t mean to. I—”

“Cade?” she gasped, her eyes getting even wider. “Is it really you? Did the antidote work? You can think now? You can understand what I’m saying?”

“Of course I understand,” he said roughly. “I understand a hell of a lot more than I want to. What I did…” He shook his head. “It’s fucking unforgivable.”

“It’s better than what Goodie Bo-long’s Manimals did to her.” Andrea nodded to the side and Cade looked to see what she was talking about.

In the enclosure next to the one they were in, he saw a sight that first confused him…and then turned his stomach. Two naked males were covered in what looked like green paint, he thought. But then he saw the mangled remains of a woman—a woman who looked like all the people standing around their enclosure. She had green skin and green blood—that was what the two males were painted with—her blood.

“They must have fucking ripped her apart,” Cade muttered. “Gods—fucking horrible!”

“They did,” Andrea said in a low voice. “They went Primal—just like you did. But you didn’t kill me or hurt me like they hurt her.”
