Flow-da shrugged.

“For the sheer, wild thrill of it, I guess. Being taken by two or three big males—mounted over and over out in the wild like that. That really gets some people excited. Not me, of course,” she added. “The only one I want is my sweet Hartford.”

“You have him so well trained,” Andi said enviously. “Cade was, uh, putting his face between my thighs under the table and there was no way I could stop him!”

“I figured something like that was going on.” Flow-da nodded. “I’m telling you, you’d better give him some of your Sweet Drops. They have a calming effect on a Manimal. In fact, I’m going to let Hartford sleep with me and suck my nipples all night long—it’s the only thing that keeps him from mounting me.”

Andi thought of doing that—of letting Cade into bed with her and allowing her huge, naked Protector to suck and lick her bare nipples all night. A rush of pure desire ran through her and she tried to push it back.

No, I can’t do that! He’s my Protector—not my boyfriend. Think how he’ll feel once he gets back to his right mind! she told herself. Because she was sure that the big Hybrid could be cured—one way or another. She couldn’t let herself believe anything else.

“I just don’t know,” she said hesitantly.

“Look, you need to take the situation in hand before it gets out of control,” Flow-da argued. “I know you’re new here and you haven’t been in this position before, but believe me—you don’t want your Manimal going Primal on you!”

“Going Primal?” Andi asked, frowning. “What does that mean?”

“Getting like the wild Manimal packs, where he’s been deprived of sex for so long that all he can think about is claiming you as his mate,” Flow-da explained. “I’ve seen that happen and it’s not pretty, believe me!”

“Oh? What happened? Where?” Andi couldn’t help asking. “It wasn’t you and Hartford, was it?” she added in a low voice.

“Oh my goodness, no! I mean, yes Hartford has knotted me and bred me a few…well, a lot of times,” Flow-da admitted, blushing bright green. “But he’s mostly being playful when he does it. A Manimal who’s gone Primal is fierce and wild and out of control! It happened to a friend of mine—she had to go on a trip and she left her Manimal at home alone. There was plenty of food for him and everything, but he went crazy missing her. You can’t explain to them that you’ll be back you know—they don’t understand,” she added.

Andi nodded, thinking she had often had the same thought about pets. How could you reassure an animal that even though you were leaving, you would be back for them? It always seemed like one of the crueler aspects of pet ownership to her.

“Anyway, when she got home, her Manimal practically tackled her! He hadn’t had any Sweet Drops in ages and he basically pushed her over the couch and mounted her then and there. I was with her and I tried to stop him,” Flow-da added, her eyes wide. “But even though I threw a whole bucket of cold water on him, he just wouldn’t leave her alone! His eyes went red and that’s when I knew he had gone Primal.” She sighed. “The worst thing was, my friend was a NO—a New Order believer. So she thought it was incredibly wrong and sinful to let her Manimal do anything sexual to her—let alone knot her and breed her.”

“Oh no—what happened to her? Did she ever get over it?” Andi felt for the poor woman—how awful for her!

Flow-da sighed mournfully.

“Well…I’m afraid she got pregnant. She tried to hide it but the other NOs found out and kicked her out of their society. She and her Manimal went to live on the moon colony.” She shrugged. “There was really nothing else they could do.”

“So she still kept him, even after he—you know—attacked her like that?” Andi could scarcely believe it.

“Oh yes.” Flow-da nodded. “She felt it was wrong to leave him on his own. He was her husband for years you know and they were deeply in love. To tell you the truth, I think she was glad to have an excuse to move away from the NOs and go someplace less judgmental. She really did miss her husband and want to be with him—it was just that they’d convinced her it was wrong with all their holier-than-thou talk.”

“They seem to have a lot of influence around here,” Andi remarked.

“The NOs? Oh yes—in this town especially. They have a ‘Haven’ here—that’s what they call it. They try to brainwash you if you come anywhere near them—that’s what happened to my friend.” Flow-da looked thoughtful. “You know, I almost wonder if she left her Manimal alone for so long on purpose, so he would go Primal and she couldn’t stop him.” She shook her head. “But of course, I can’t presume to know that and I would never say such a thing to her—it was just the idea that I got from the way she was acting while he was—you know—knotting her.”
