Not saying anything about what he may have going on, I nodded, agreeing with him. I didn’t fucking like it either. “She’s got a little more color though. She was having trouble sleeping.”
He smirked at me, his features relaxing the tiniest bit when amusement flickered through his eyes. “You do your classic rocking her to sleep shit?”
I grinned, letting that be my answer. He snorted and wrapped his arm around her, too, gently moving her head to place his arm there.
“I’ll be here the rest of the day. You want to deal with Antonio after his nap or me?”
I snorted. “I’ve been ordered in here like a bad kid by Ink until I’m in a better mood.”
Alejandro’s lips twitched the slightest bit in amusement. He knew how I could get when Elaina wasn’t feeling well. I was a real fucking dick. “I’ll deal with him then. Catch you some rest, Prez. I’ll be here if she wakes up. You look like you fucking need it.”
I raised my arm the slightest bit to give him the middle finger. This time, he let a small chuckle escape.
CHAPTER FOUR
Joey
“Feels weird not having my wife around,” Ink grumbled from in front of me. He had his phone propped up in front of him on its stand and a PlayStation 4 controller in his hand, leaning forward, his elbows pressed down on his knees as he played Call of Duty Mobile. Gaming was something he’d recently gotten into, and whenever he wasn’t busy with the club, my sister, or their daughter, he was glued to that phone.
I snorted. “Probably because you spend all your time up her ass.”
He grinned, not taking his eyes off his screen. I swore nothing bothered this man. Honestly, the only time I’d ever seen him lose his shit was when Jessie was kidnapped. He went on a fucking rampage. Otherwise, he was laid back and chill.
Gunfire blasted from the speaker of his phone. “Sounds like you’re trying to claim you’re not constantly up Elaina’s. Do you not remember how dickish you were when she was sick?”
I scowled at him. He glanced up at me and chuckled. Then, he cursed. “Fuck. I died.”
I barked out a laugh. “That’s what you fucking get, asshole.”
He shrugged, taking one hand off the controller to press a couple of things on his screen, most likely so he could jump into another match. “Man, how fucking nice would it be if we got to respawn like we do in video games? Wouldn’t have so much to worry about when trouble made its way to our doorstep.”
I shrugged. I’d wondered the same thing too sometimes. But then, other things would pop up into my mind, too—like how bad it could go. “Yeah, but what happens when your entire team is down? No one is left to collect your tags, brother. Then, we’re right back at square one. Probably best that we can’t. Makes people more careful and aware of what’s going on in their surroundings. Imagine how reckless they’d be if they knew they could just respawn.”
He grunted, an annoyed look passing over his face when he realized I was right. “Always got to go so fucking deep with shit, Joey.”
I snorted. “That’s why I’m the president, Ink, and you’re just the VP.”
He arched a brow, still staring at his screen. Gunfire exploded from his phone, along with the shouts of some automated voice talking about claiming Charlie or something like that. “Wanna take it outside and test that theory? I could kick your ass and take the president’s seat in a heartbeat.”
“My money is on Joey,” Alejandro said, suddenly appearing and coming up to the table. The man was like a snake—never knew he was there until he was getting ready to strike. He gracefully lowered himself into a seat before leaning back, resting his elbows on the armrests before steepling his fingers together in front of him. “What are we discussing?”
“Respawning,” Ink told him, still not looking away from his phone. “How do you feel about humanity being able to respawn when they’re killed?”
Alejandro hummed as I lifted my beer to my lips. His answer would probably be a good one. Ink loved having conversations with Alejandro and getting his insight on things. The man was cruel and deranged in the most civilized way, and if I hadn’t seen the shit I had in life, hadn’t endured the shit I had, I’d have run the other way from him.
“I’d never bother grabbing their tags.”
I choked on my beer when I laughed, and Alejandro reached over to smack my back. I set my beer down, still laughing. Even Ink was laughing, not even caring that he’d just died yet again.
“Well, that says everything we need to know,” Ink snorted.
The clubhouse doors opened, and Elaina walked in with Jessie, both of them holding bags. Alejandro got up and grabbed Elaina’s bags from her before softly kissing her. He’d been quiet and in a mood all day after she announced she was going shopping. I figured it had something to do with whatever he was dealing with because he was on his phone all day, that damn tracker up.
