“Why are you asking me and not TJ?”

“Because I need to know if he’s working for the Agency, and I don’t think he’ll tell me the truth. Besides, his family has a certain reputation, and I would like to avoid getting on their bad side. There are connections I would disturb. So I’m here with you.”

“I assure you I can figure out exactly who you are.”

He leaned forward, a serious expression on his face. “I’m sure you will, Louisa. I’m also sure there will be several arse kickings in my future. I’ve got a lot on the line here, and that should tell you how seriously I’m taking this threat. The Jester could lead me to someone far more dangerous.”

Now they were getting somewhere. “Who are you looking for?”

He sat back, looking like a brat prince once again. “If I come to trust you, I’ll let you in on the case. I have to convince my partner, though. He doesn’t like your team.”

So Kala probably busted his balls at some point. Literally.

“Could you tell me where we’re going?”

“And ruin the surprise?” He smiled, a secretive expression that would get most girls all riled up. He had the kind of good looks that meant he could get away with murder.

And that meant he would underestimate her. He would think he could smile and flirt with her a little and get whatever he wanted.

Men. Wasn’t that what TJ was doing? When she wanted a relationship, it wasn’t time. When he did, she was supposed to fall in line.

“This is all useless. I don’t know anything.” She turned away from him. They were close to the airport, as evidenced by the wide, flat fields around them. The Metroplex was huge and filled with thriving communities, but this space around the airport still had some undeveloped land.

All the better to hide a private airfield so assholes could kidnap nice girls who just wanted to go on a date.

“What did you do to the real Miguel? Please tell me you didn’t kill him. He was real, right?”

The man shrugged. “He’s perfectly fine. Though likely a bit upset his date stood him up. I sent him to another café. Really, darling, the two of you wouldn’t be a good match. I’m much more fun, as you’ll find out.”

A sliding sound caught her attention, the barrier between the front and back seats coming down.

“Vi har sällskap,” the driver said.

That got her captor’s attention. He turned in his seat, looking out the back. “The Jeep?”

Someone was following them? She twisted to get a look.

The vehicle seemed so familiar.

“De har legat bakom oss,” the driver began.

Lou was tired of this shit. “Okay, polyglots, can we get rid of the Finnish or Swedish or whatever you’re speaking? It’s kind of torture.”

“Swedish,” the woman replied, tension in her voice. “I would switch to Romanian but it’s a Slavic language. I would bet a lot that you speak Russian.”

She spoke several languages. Russian. Mandarin. Some Arabic. She was quite good with Spanish. The languages she’d learned had been about work. Russia and China were often their foes, and the Middle East was a part of the world that was always ripe for war. The Spanish was because she lived in Texas.

Why would they know Swedish? Did they spy for meatballs?

“They could be going to the airfield,” her captor said.

“No. They’re following us,” the driver insisted.

“Well, they won’t be able to follow us in unless they have the proper papers.” He pulled his cell. “Yes, we’re almost there and we have the package with us, but we might have a problem.”

Lou was watching the Jeep. Was that Erin Taggart’s Jeep?

She took a long breath. If Erin was in that Jeep, then they knew she was in here and in trouble. They wouldn’t allow this limo to make it to the airfield. They wouldn’t risk losing her.

But they would have to wait. They couldn’t do anything in the city. They wouldn’t risk it on the crowded freeway.

She saw someone moving inside the Jeep and the flash of metal in the sunlight.

TJ. TJ was in that Jeep, and he’d come for her. He was going to do whatever it took to get her back.

Shit. Lou grabbed the seatbelt and buckled herself in because this ride was about to go wild.

* * * *

TJ watched the limo pass the exit that would have taken them to DFW proper. “They’re definitely headed to the private airfield. Do we have someone looking into their schedule?”

“I’m on it,” Kenzie said over the line.

The twins were online over his mom’s cell, so the call could be heard through the Jeep. He’d called in the minute he realized Lou was in that limo. They’d been following them through traffic cameras, looking for a place where he could try to stop the vehicle. By force, if necessary.
