Bath, bottle, and diaper evenings were her favorite, but she hadn’t had the gumption to tell him that. He’d said he enjoyed when she was younger, and she believed him, but she knew he didn’t fully realize she preferred it and wished he would let her be younger more often.

It was embarrassing to admit. She wasn’t sure many of her friends spent as much time as her in a younger mindset. She knew Ellie wore diapers sometimes just like Daisy, but how often?

Daisy loved her Daddy so much, and she didn’t want to rock the boat by complaining. She was the luckiest Little girl in the world. Why should she want more? He already gave her so much.

She was well aware that assuming a younger role was a lot more work for Bear. He had to take the time to rock her and feed her and bathe her and change her diaper. He worked long hours just like she did. It would be rude to ask him to spend his precious time off caring for her at a deeper level.

Daddy’s voice interrupted her pity party, jerking her back to the present. “What’s going on in your pretty head, Daisy?”

She pushed around the last few green beans with the chopsticks and shrugged. “Nothing.”

He leaned forward and put his elbows on the table. “I’m not buying that, Baby girl. Not for a second. You’ve been deep in thought for ten minutes, no longer eating. And you look sad.”

She swallowed hard and dropped her chopsticks.

“Daisy…” he warned. “Talk to Daddy.”

She shook her head. “It’s nothing, Daddy. I swear.” She didn’t want to tell him what she was thinking. It wasn’t fair to him. She wouldn’t burden him with her problems.

Bear stood from the table and reached for their plates to carry them to the dishwasher. He silently loaded everything and put away the leftovers.

Daisy sat very still in her seat and watched him. She’d never seen him this quiet. He wasn’t giving her any indication what he was thinking. Was he mad? She couldn’t be sure. He probably should be but she’d never seen him angry. Not with her at least.

She was being naughty, though.

When he was finished, he turned around, leaned against the counter, and crossed his arms over his chest. He stared at her for a long time. “It bothers me that you won’t tell me what’s on your mind, Daisy.”

“I’m sorry, Daddy.” She glanced down at her lap and fidgeted. Why hadn’t she realized she was so deep in her head that he’d noticed she was thinking so hard? “It’s not a big deal. I promise.”

“I think you should let me be the judge of that, Baby girl.”

She tried to think of something she could say to appease him. “I was just thinking about the green beans and wondering if maybe I could dip other vegetables into ranch dressing. I bet they would taste good that way, too.” She glanced up at him hopefully.

His brows rose high on his head and he blinked at her. “Now you’re insulting me, Daisy.” His voice was hurt. “I think you should go sit in your naughty chair in your nursery until you’re willing to tell Daddy the truth.”

Daisy sucked in a breath. She’d hoped to never need that naughty chair, but there was no doubt she’d earned it tonight. She’d kept secrets from Daddy and lied to him.

She slid off the chair and shuffled toward her nursery, heading straight for the corner and dropping onto the chair, facing the wall. Tears welled up in the corners of her eyes and she swiped them away.

The phrases Daddy had painted on the walls jumped out at her. Think Twice, I Love You, Be Good. She definitely should have thought twice about lying to Daddy. She hoped he still loved her after she’d treated him with such disrespect. She was certainly not being a good girl.

The only thing worse than not telling Daddy what she’d been thinking was disappointing him. It weighed heavily on her.

Daddy didn’t come into the room for a long time. She wondered if he was watching her from the hallway. She wasn’t sure. Sadness crept in deeper with every passing minute. She’d alienated him and insulted him and hurt his feelings. That wasn’t a very nice girl.

She sniffled as tears fell again. She didn’t have any tissues, so she lifted the corner of her T-shirt to wipe her eyes. She felt confined and restricted in the tight jeans, panties, bra, and T-shirt she’d worn to work.

Obviously, there was no way to avoid putting on adult clothes for the hours she was at work every day. She had no choice but to be an adult while running a business. But she just wanted to shed those things when she got home and not have to think about anything.
