This news shocks me. We haven’t mentioned the club since that first day.

“You want me to go?”

“I’d prefer not to go at all, but I’m not going to stop you.”

“You want to hook up with me at the club?”

He shakes his head immediately. “I don’t want what’s going on between us to start in a sex club.”

“There are over twenty-four hours between then and now,” I say, my cheeks warming with the suggestion. “A lot can happen between us in that amount of time.”

“Devyn,” he groans, shifting in his seat.

“You always do that,” I complain, dropping my eyes to the menu in my hands but finding myself incapable of deciphering the words. My mind is racing with all the possibilities, some of them not good at all.

“Do what?”

“Shut me down. I feel like sometimes you wish I were someone else, or that you want to do some things, but just not with me.”

He turns toward me, his body shifting against my side. Gently, he turns my head, forcing me to look at him.

“Did you miss the fact that I just called you mine?”

I swallow, my lips parting the slightest bit. “But you don’t want to—”

“Oh, sweetheart. Do I ever want to, but I’m not going to rush this. I refuse to let carnal urges force my hand. We have to make sure this is right, that it’s something we both want. I can’t risk hurting you.”

I nod, understanding what he means. I’m more than ready and have been for quite some time, but it’s not fair for me to rush him either. I’m sure I could tempt him. I could use coercion to force him into action, but he could end up regretting what we do, and that’s the very last thing I want to happen.

Courtney comes back with our drinks, and the spell is temporarily broken. We order our food, and chat about the orders I’ll be working on for the next couple of days as we wait.

My body hums the entire time, my fingers wanting to roam over his skin, but I manage to keep my hands to myself.

It doesn’t stop the hum in my body that’s making my skin itch.

By the time we make it back to the clubhouse, I’m on fire. I know I need to go back inside and get to work, but I slide past Emmett when he opens the passenger door for me and start to walk around the side of the clubhouse. There’s no privacy inside, and I already feel like the Cerberus members can read every thought that swims through my head.

He has done absolutely nothing out of the ordinary to set me on fire, but that hasn’t stopped the flames of arousal from licking at my skin since he declared me his.

My hands are trembling as we round the corner of the clubhouse. It isn’t exactly a hundred percent private. With the positioning of Misty’s house, anyone looking out the bedroom window on the second floor could see us, but it’s the best option right now.

I stop in my tracks, loving the way his arm immediately wraps around my waist so he doesn’t knock me over.

“What’s wrong?” he asks as I turn toward him.

I shake my head, lifting on my toes and pressing my mouth to his.

“Dev—”

I slip my tongue inside his mouth before he can protest, and much to my surprise, he grips me tighter. My insides come alive, my belly flipping over as tingles race all over my body. It gives a whole new meaning to butterflies.

He holds me tighter as he guides me against the building, the bricks warm from the afternoon sun.

I cling to him, knowing this won’t last long. He’ll come to his senses and pull away soon.

I feel the groan that rumbles out of him in my bones. When he pushes against me, I no longer have any doubts about how much this man wants me. I feel it in every hard inch of him. I press harder against him, my hand releasing his shirt to run along his side.

He breaks the kiss. His breathing has changed as much as mine has, and he grabs my hand before I can sweep it down the front of his jeans.

“Devyn,” he says. “Don’t.”

I blink up at him, confused. We both want the same thing. I just can’t wrap my head around him always hitting the brakes.

“You don’t want me.”

He huffs a humorless laugh. “I couldn’t stop wanting you if I tried, but that’s not all this is.”

“You want more?” I know the question is a risk. He could easily reject me with his next breath.

“So much more,” he says.

I’m both elated and annoyed when cool air replaces his warmth as he steps back.

Chapter 24

Legacy

I know I’ve done some bad things in my life. I’ve made wrong choices and more mistakes than I could ever count. I knew I was lucky each and every time something went my way, surprised my luck hadn’t run out yet.
