She rubbed at her chest as she entered her home. Closing the door, she leaned against it.

That couldn’t mean anything, could it? No, there couldn’t be any meaning, because it didn’t exist. There was no way it could have existed. Elle hadn’t given birth yet. Her best friend wasn’t even full term. She still had a few months to go.

Whatever it was, it had been an idiotic thought. There was an easy explanation. With all the talk of the Disaster of the Otherworld, and the fear of them coming to harm Elle, it must have triggered a horrible thought. There was no way it was a premonition of what was to come. Nothing to fear. No reason whatsoever to be afraid.

Layla took another deep breath and then the bell rang at her door. Alexander. She didn’t hesitate.

Spinning around, she pulled open the door, and there he was on her doorstep. He wore a pair of dark pants and a crisp white shirt that showed off his chest.

“Hello, Layla.”

She smiled up at him.

“Some of the rules, my dear, are true. I do in fact need an invite to get into your home.”

“Oh, er, then, yes, of course. I invite you in.” Could she have been more embarrassing?

Alexander stepped across the line, taking the door from her, and closing it. “Where are your parents?”

“They had some errands to run. They’re not going to be here.”

He frowned. “They had errands to run on a full moon?”

“Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t. I never know what they’re up to, but it’s fine.”

This made him frown. “It’s fine.”

“Yes.” She pressed her lips together. “Would you like a drink? I mean, do you like tea? Coffee? A beer?” They didn’t even have any beer. She didn’t know why she was offering. “Hot chocolate?”

“Coffee is fine.”

“You drink coffee?”

“I drink and I eat,” he said.

“Oh,” Layla said. “Do all vampires drink and eat?”

“Some of us do. Those that have learned to control the thirst for blood. We don’t have to succumb to the … well … you know.”

“The bloodlust.”

“Yes.”

“That’s good. So you have control of it.” Layla groaned and spun back to face him, only Alexander had been walking. She felt herself falling, and he caught her around the waist.

Opening her eyes, she stared up at him. Her mouth suddenly went dry and she licked her lips. His gaze dropped to her tongue.

“Layla, I only have so much control and with you, it seems to be … very difficult for me.”

“Why is it difficult?”

“Because, my sweet, I want to fuck you.”

He made her gasp. Those words went straight between her legs and she couldn’t help but press her thighs together. He helped her up so she was no longer reclined in his arms.

“I should go.”

“No, please don’t.”

Alexander had pulled away. She reached out and placed a hand on his arm. It was pathetic, she knew that. There was no way she was going to be able to stop him if he wanted to go. All she could think about was making him stay. She wasn’t offended.

“I want you,” she said.

Alexander lifted his gaze.

“You don’t know what you’re saying,” he said.

This made her chuckle. “Actually, it’s the first real thing I know. It’s insane, right? I don’t want to be with any of the wolves. They treat humans like crap. I’d just be another willing body to them, and that’s not what I want. I know you’re not offering me forever, because the truth is, you can’t stay in the pack, but when I’m with you, I feel so many things. I don’t know what is happening to me, but I do know I can’t stop it.” She stopped, taking a deep breath. Crap! What had she done?

She didn’t look away, even though she was completely embarrassed by what she had just said. Was he going to leave? Was he offended by her? Angry? She nibbled her lip and tried not to panic. The last thing she wanted was for him to leave.

In a flash, he stood right in front of her. “Are you telling me, my sweet, that you would like me to fuck you?”

“Yes.”

She’d been saving her virginity for the man she would love. The person she wanted to spend the rest of her life with. Alexander could be that person, even if he was a vampire.

“You have no idea what you’re saying,” he said.

“I’m very clear.”

She took a step toward him, tilted her head back, and placed her hand on his chest. His heart didn’t make any movement.

“Can you … have sex?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“I have no idea.”

He cupped her cheek and Layla put both of her hands on his chest and drew them up to circle around his neck.

“Unless you don’t want to?”

He chuckled, but it was a sexy sound, not hysterical.

“Layla, I just told you that I want to fuck you. Trust me, I want to, very much, I want to.”
