“I was in bed.”

“This is how you sleep?”

“Yes.”

“Fuck.”

“You should go back to your bed, Annika.”

“Is that what you really want?” I ask, suddenly bold enough to give even a little bit of a voice to what it is I want from this man.

“No,” he admits. I give him a watery smile.

“Come on,” I say, leading him over to the couch. I pull a blanket off the back of the couch. I pat the cushion. “Lay down.” He does and I lie down beside him. Pulling the blanket up over us, I let him snuggle into me.

“Happy birthday, Legs,” he murmurs, kissing my forehead. Lying in his arms, no matter how innocent, is something I want repeated forever.

Oh yeah, it’s my seventeenth birthday.

My birthday will never be the same again.

Nothing will ever be the same again.

Chapter One

Kellen

October 26th, 1989

I nurse a beer as I watch Annika like a hawk. She didn’t want a big blow out party for her eighteenth. Not my sweet girl. No, she wanted to go bowling. My mom and Mrs. Andrews are talking at the score station while Clyde and his dad are taking about the Saints game that was on last week. Kerry is sitting off to the side, staring daggers at Clyde. I know she’s in love with him and he’s in love with her, but he has to wait another two weeks to do anything about it. I, on the other hand, will be doing something about it tonight. After Dad died, both Clyde and I came home more and more. Every night Annika has slept on the couch in my old bedroom. In the middle of the night, she’d snake her hand out and grab onto mine. She’d hold on to me for dear life. She is my… well, everything. I am not sure she knows how she saved me. How she anchored herself to me and kept me from drowning. The night that it happened; I was lost until she jumped into my arms. I was so out of it, I didn’t realize that she was half naked, but thankfully the sheriff turned his head away as she sobbed in my arms. She said she wanted to be close to Kerry, but I didn’t believe that for second, or perhaps I didn’t want to believe that. I watch as Annika picks up her ball from the ball return and moves up to the line. She does this little shimmy dance; her ass looks amazing in those tight jeans, before she lines the ball up and lets it rip. A strike, as usual.

“Yay!” she shouts, turning around and jumping up and down. Her ample tits bounce as she does.

“Good job, birthday girl,” her dad says, making her laugh. I love that fucking laugh. I hear it in my dreams. The need to claim her courses through my veins and

“Did you see?” she asks, coming to sit down beside me.

“I did. You’re good at this,” I tell her.

“I want to join a league. Don’t you think that would be fun?”

“I have no idea,” I say, chuckling.

“Do it with me?” she asks, and I choke on my beer. “What?” “Want to get a hot dog?” I nod and we stand, walking over to the food court. It’s a good ten lanes and a hallway away from the two lanes we are using. Without thinking, I drag her down the hallway and press her back to the wall, my chest pressed against hers. I know she feels my hard cock jutting against her soft belly when her eyes widen. “Is that for me?” God, I’d swear she does this stuff on purpose. I’ve noticed it for two years, but I’ve never risen to the bait before. Now I can do nothing but rise to the occasion. Now she’s mine.

“That mouth of yours is going to get you in trouble, Legs.” My mouth is dangerously close to her ear, one hand on her hip, the other on the wall above her head.

“Just who do you think is man enough to punish me?” she asks, leaning closer to me. Fuck me. I can smell her perfume. Eternity by Calvin Klein was my gift to her last year, though she didn’t get it for almost two weeks after her birthday. We weren’t in any place to celebrate. She wasn’t either. She’s been a member of my family since the day she was born, and she cried right along with my mom, Kerry, and I. She rarely left my side. She knew I needed her. “Maybe Corbin Gallagher?” Why the fuck is she talking to me about the dumb shit kid from her senior class who asked her to homecoming? Fuck that kid. Thankfully, she said no and went with Kerry, as she did every dance, but still. My eyes connect with hers and I see the mischief in them.
