“Damn, I can’t wait to get my hands on Beast,” Mary says, fanning herself which causes Wrench and Mack to remember we’re still here.
“What’s going on, Dash?” he asks with a raised brow full of knowing suspicion.
“Nothing. Just some girl talk,” Mary adds. Taylor looks curious and nervous, but his eyes land on me again, smiling.
“I hope Law didn’t give you a hard time about your aunt,” Taylor asks me, acting shy which makes me uncomfortable. I thought we were past this whole flirting thing when I told him I wasn’t interested.
“Oh no, he didn’t. He wanted to make sure I was safe. Thanks, though.”
“Okay. Well, I’ve got to get back to shower. Maybe I’ll see you around.” He waves at me before leaving their place.
“Damn, I’m going to have to warn that boy to stay away if he wants to see another day.”
“I told him I wasn’t interested.”
“He already asked you out?” Wrench asked.
“Yes, when he picked me up, but we straightened it out that I wasn’t entertaining the idea.” I roll my eyes. I’ve seen guys and girls try way harder for attention. Hell, I’ve been the girl to flirt with when I was young, even though I never actually wanted the attention once I got it. I ran like the wind.
“He’s a flirt. Last week he was flirting with Jamie at the store and then with Rosa. All he wants to do is build up his ego. Don’t worry about him, Wrench.” Mack brushes her husband’s chest as he stares out the back door where Taylor exited.
He turns back and kisses her hands. “I’m not worried about him as much as I’m worried about what Law will do to him when he finds out. I assure you if he flirted with you, I’d bust his jaw. He’s a great mechanic, and I’d hate to lose him.”
“Vanessa won’t let Law do anything to Taylor, right?”
“I guess. I don’t know if I could stop him.”
“Sweetie, you don’t know the power you have yet,” Mary adds, giggling.
“Fuck, Law has got his hands full.” Wrench shakes his head. “Dash, I need to get back to the garage for a bit. I just came to steal a kiss and tell you I needed another hour or so.”
“Okay. I’ll start dinner soon.”
“I’m getting ready to leave anyway,” Mary says. She has her babies in her arms.
“I’ll lend you a hand,” I offer.
“Thank you. William’s on his way home early, so I have to cut our playdate short.” I forget that’s Beast’s real name. Mary’s grinning from ear to ear because her man is coming home early.
These women make me feel so welcome. I take her diaper bag and the hand of her oldest, leading the toddler outside after Mack gives her hugs to the kiddies and Mary.
“Thanks, Van. Soon this will probably be you if Law has his way. These cavemen don’t waste any time.”
“I see.” A tingling in my belly intensifies at the image of little ones looking just like a mini version of Jacob and me. We buckle in the kiddies and then she hugs me goodbye before getting inside.
Once I wave them off, I walk back into the house and smile as Mack dances in the kitchen while cooking. “Girl, you are floating.”
“If you looked in the mirror, you’d see the same thing. How long have you liked him?” Her brow raises.
“Since the day he pulled me from the trunk.”
“You should have come here sooner.”
“Why have there been a lot of women in and out of his life since then?”
“None that I’m aware of, but you’ve missed out on almost a year.”
“Maybe he wouldn’t have liked me. I dyed my hair and lost the little weight I put on when I first moved away.”
“Van, please. I saw pictures of you. You were stunning as always, and it was like twenty pounds on what? A buck twenty?”
“Yeah, I was actually one-forty, exactly.”
“Now, you’re all tits and ass until he fills you with little ones.”
“I think we’re all getting ahead of ourselves. He probably doesn’t even want kids or even with me. Maybe… he just wants to bang me, which I’m totally fine with.”
“Bullshit.” She rolls her eyes while chopping onions.
“Bullshit,” comes from a tiny voice.
“Don’t say that, Simon.” I look down to see their son pouting with a toy car in his hand.
“Okay, mama.”
“I’ll be back. I don’t want busy ears to hear our conversation.” She takes her eldest’s hand and leads him to the table to color. Mack just learned that she’s pregnant with twins, so Wrench warned her about carrying their son Simon now. He’s a little cutie, though, who is already trying to tinker with his daddy’s tools.
Panic sets in for the imaginary kids I’d have with Law. What if they got ahold of Law’s weapons? I shake that stupidity from my head because it’s not like we’re even a couple and that’s a million miles from reality at the moment.
