“Harrison, I had no idea this was here.”

“See, you gotta stick with me. I’ll show you things that will blow your mind.”

She peeks over at me and I lift an eyebrow. “Blow my mind?” she asks.

“You have no idea.” I reach for her hand again and lead her toward the logs near the lake. “I was prom king, remember?”

She laughs, shaking her head. “Not something you let people forget.”

She steps up to the lake to get a better view and I collect wood to make a fire. As I drop the last log onto the pile, I look up at her and she steals my damn breath away. The way the sun shines down on her, casting her reflection onto the water, it’s stunning. She looks like an angel.

My angel.

I walk over to her and wrap my arm around her shoulders. “You’re deep in thought.”

She shrugs before lifting her eyes to mine. “What you did back there, telling Drake he wasn’t welcome. I just want you to know that even though I didn’t need you to do that, it is appreciated.”

“Oh, I know you don’t need me for anything, February Frost, but it doesn’t mean I’ll stop trying.”

Our eyes stay locked as she searches mine. She blinks and steps away from me, wrapping her arms around herself.

The damn bubble popped again. This girl has given me the worst case of blue balls I’ve ever experienced, and she has no idea.

“Come on,” I say, leading her toward the fire pit. She sits down as I put some dead leaves under the logs to get a fire going. I pull a Zippo lighter out of my pocket and flip it open. As I drag my finger over it, the flame shoots up.

“You just so happen to have a lighter in your pocket?”

I glance back at her and wiggle my eyebrows. “I wasn’t just prom king, I used to be a Boy Scout. I’m always prepared.”

She rolls her eyes playfully and laughs. “I’m not even surprised.”

I get the fire going and sit down on the log right beside her. We both just stare at the crackling flames for a while before I can’t take it anymore.

“Are we just going to pretend we didn’t kiss the other night?”

Her cheeks turn pink and it has nothing to do with the fire in front of us. She’s been avoiding me since that night and I need to know why.

“No, I guess not.”

She continues to stare at the fire, but my focus is completely on her. “For a guy that doesn’t like to fail, watching you rush off after kissing you wasn’t the greatest feeling.”

She reaches over, resting her hand on my thigh. My dick is very excited about it, but my heart is wondering where this is going.

“I don’t like making excuses. It makes you appear weak.” Her eyes lift to mine and the blue color of her eyes sparkle as the flames of the fire glow. “I keep thinking my heart won’t be able to survive another Drake.”

I rest my hand on hers and smile. “My name’s Harrison.” We both laugh and I tighten my hold on her hand. “Before I moved back to Magnolia Point, I was in a relationship. I knew in my heart it wasn’t perfect, but like I’ve told you, I don’t like failing. So I kept the relationship going and when my dad died, she couldn’t even be bothered to come to the funeral.”

“Oh, Harrison, I’m sorry.”

I shake my head as I smile. “Don’t be. My dad didn’t like her anyway.” I chuckle at the memory of my father and his brutal honesty that Hilary was not the girl for me. “My point is, I know what it’s like feeling like you need to protect yourself. It’s easier than hoping you don’t get hurt again.” I move my face closer to hers and notice her breathing is as heavy as mine. “But if you don’t take the chance, you’ll live with regret and that’s worse, in my opinion.” I slide my hand up her arm and rest it on her cheek as my eyes bounce between hers. “I’m willing to take a chance, February. The question is, are you?” Her eyes soften as she stares at me and I move my lips just a breath away from hers. “You’ve got me under some damn spell, February. I can’t promise you what the future holds, but I will promise you that I will never do anything to hurt you. I want, no, I need, to kiss you again, but I can’t unless I know it won’t be the last time.”

It’s killing me not to slam my lips to hers, but this is her move. If she wants this, I’m all in, but I need her to show me she’s got at least one foot in.
