I’d FaceTimed Shelby twice now as well, wanting to add her to the editorial as well. She was incredibly nice and terribly supportive of Landon. I instantly realized why he liked her so much. It helped that she sang my praises for pulling him from the final depths of depression. Now, I was reading through my last draft to make sure it was ready to go.

I was nervous, but my gut told me it was one of the best things I’d ever written. Landon said it was great, but I wasn’t sure I could trust him to be the best judge. He had an ulterior motive to make sure I was happy. One that we repeated every chance we could get. We’d now christened every inch of the cabin and a sleeping bag in the backyard. Landon moved from the front window. We couldn’t believe the news outlets were still hanging around. You would think they’d get bored watching the cabin. At least they got points for persistence.

We’d had a few deliveries to get through with no issue, thankfully. Pizza last night, and Shelby had sent Landon a package that he received this morning. His obsession with Chopped helped feed us this morning as there was a limited amount of food left in the pantry and fridge.

“You look super cute in my clothes. Better without, but still cute.” He smiled a boyish grin, one that warmed my soul down to my toes. “Last draft?”

I could smell his cologne as he leaned over my shoulder. It was hard to concentrate with him that close. I assumed he not only knew that but also enjoyed knowing he was the reason for the tension in my body and took great pleasure in that knowledge. The more time we spent together, the more comfortable we became. He had a teasing, sweet, but sensitive personality that made me smile so much my jaw hurt. I’d never meant anyone like him, and I couldn’t imagine my life without him at this point. The thought, which increased each day, made me a little dizzy. I hadn’t told him in so many words. My intuition told me he felt the same way, though.

“You know you’re supposed to be resting, right? Doctor’s orders,” I taunted, trying to give him a hard time.

“I’m pretty certain I was moving just fine earlier this morning in the shower with you.” He grinned, stepping away from me and into the kitchen to grab a bottle of water.

I blushed. Yes, he definitely maneuvered in the shower just fine. Shaking my head, I knew I wasn’t getting anywhere with him. Besides, he’d talked with Amelia earlier about some exercises he could work on if he felt stiff. I couldn’t very well give him too hard of a time when I was enjoying the benefits of his movement. And he had a follow-up appointment today, so if anything came from that, we could revisit the directions he’d been given.

“What time is Dr. Sutton coming by?” I asked.

“This afternoon, around 2:00, I think. I almost called to see if we could go to the office instead, but I’d like another day cabin-bound, so to speak. I contacted the grocery store about a delivery of some things we’ll need, and they’re dropping it off today as well.” He tilted his head towards me. “We could have your parents over for dinner tonight, share the good news with them. And get you some different clothes. But like I said, you look cute in mine.”

“Good news?” I finished the last line of typing and turned to look at him. Had I missed something?

My mouth dropped, and I scooted back in the seat. He was on one knee, holding a ring toward me. This must have been the package Shelby had shipped. My hand rested on my chest, feeling my heart pounding. Was I dreaming? I felt hot tears instantly spring down my cheeks. Sitting there, staring at him on his knee, I knew this was the happiest I’d ever been.

LANDON

“Before you say anything, I want to explain,” I started, not wanting her to answer just yet. “I know it’s quick, but honestly, I knew you were the one for me the minute you stormed out that morning. Someone needs to challenge me and call me out for my bullshit. That first wreck I was in changed my life forever, but it also made me scared. For years, I didn’t think I was good enough for anyone, or to even live some days. It was rough. But I came here, met you, and… I don’t know. I found my soulmate.”

I paused, making sure she was still with me. She hadn’t moved, but she was still breathing, so I kept going. There was no stopping now.

“I know this second accident didn’t really hurt me, but it reminded me that life is short. And I don’t want to spend another minute without you in it. I have so much to give, and with you? I’m empowered to be my best. You could say no, but just know I won’t stop asking. You and me. We’re meant to be.”
