She charged for the door, but she didn’t make it.
The gun went off, and she screamed, sinking to the floor and trying to hide from him.
Pain flooded her head, but it wasn’t from the gun. No, Mr. Rushmore grabbed her head, pulling her to her feet just as the doorbell rang.
Opening her eyes, she saw Noah had entered. Seeing him, she was both relieved and petrified.
Were they both going to die today before they found out if she was pregnant?
Chapter Seven
Noah had known what he was walking into. His obsession when it came to this woman knew no bounds, and he’d installed cameras months ago. Any time he was away from the office and needed a fix, he just tapped into his security system and watched her.
It was because of this that he saw Mr. Rushmore enter.
He’d been watching her from afar for so long. He needed to tell her that he loved her, but the words didn’t seem to want to come.
Now as that fucker had her, he saw the pain in her eyes, the tears filling them as they leaked down her cheeks.
It was unfair. So fucking unfair.
He’d wasted precious days where he hadn’t told her that he loved her.
“Well, well, well, if the little saint doesn’t finally grace us with his presence.”
Noah had already called the cops, and they had access to the security footage. They’d ordered him not to go inside, but they weren’t here, and he wasn’t going to risk his woman’s life.
This man wanted him, not Sage.
“You have no problem with her. Let her go. It’s me you want.”
He laughed. “Actually, you’re right about that, Bartley. It is you I want. I want you to suffer like I have.”
“So you’ve trashed my office. Consider us even.”
“Not quite. You see, you have taken everything from me. Everything I hold dear.”
“You’re the one who negotiated the prenup. I’m guessing you didn’t consider the clause you had placed that if you ever cheated on your wife, you were going to get nothing.”
“I declared that years ago. I can’t be held accountable for my actions.”
“Let her go,” Noah said. He didn’t want to make this man mad. No, he wanted to get Sage out of danger. This was very fucking real, and he needed her to be safe.
“No, because I know what you truly love, Bartley. It’s not all the cases you win, or the money you get, it’s this slut here.” Rushmore wrapped his hand around her neck and began to choke her.
Sage gripped his arm, and Noah tried to move forward, but Rushmore pointed the gun at her head, finally letting her go.
She took several deep breaths.
“Let her go.”
“You keep saying that, but I know you, Noah. I’ve been watching you, and this woman is the one little chink in your armor. She’s what makes you tick.”
He stared at Sage and knew she doubted Rushmore’s words.
“You’re right,” Noah said. “Sage is everything to me. She is the love of my life, and I haven’t told her until this very moment that I do love her, so fucking much. I love her more than anything in the world.”
He pulled out his cell phone and held it up so they could see their images on the camera.
“This is how far my love goes. It is probably verging on criminal, but I need to have her in my life. I need to know she is safe and happy.” He stopped looking at Rushmore and instead, focused on Sage. “I never told you because … I didn’t want to lose you. Every time I’ve … my past wasn’t good, Sage. I am so used to all the good things being taken away, that when you told me you loved me, I froze. I shouldn’t have done that.” He took a step closer, but Rushmore stopped him, pointing the gun at her head. “Don’t do it,” Noah said.
“I think I might be pregnant,” Sage said, drawing his attention.
This wasn’t the time for such an announcement, but Noah couldn’t keep the smile off his face.
“I bought a test. I haven’t taken it yet. I … I didn’t want to do it without you. I love you, Noah, so very much.”
“I love you too.”
She smiled at him, and then she winked.
Noah didn’t understand what she was doing. Why did she wink? Then he saw why. Rushmore had no choice but to drop the gun as Sage suddenly slumped against him, making herself a dead weight, almost as if she had fainted.
It was all the distraction he needed.
He attacked Rushmore just as the cops entered his office, and within a matter of minutes, what could have been the worst day of his life quickly turned into the best.
With Rushmore in the cops’ care, he went to Sage, who was sat cross-legged on the floor.
He cupped her face as he got to her, tilting her head back and staring into her eyes. “Are you okay?”
