The buyout has been final for the last six weeks or so, and while I still feel like I’m breaking the rules dating the boss’s boss, I no longer let it eat at me. That’s because I fell in love with him. Yeah, I went from kissing my rival to giving myself to him heart and soul. He owns every piece of me, well, not every piece. For some reason, Spencer keeps putting us sleeping together on the back burner. There isn’t a place on our bodies that the other hasn’t touched, but he’s never been inside me. Well, his cock has never been inside me. I know he’s trying to take things slow, but the wait is killing me.

I want him.

I’m in love with him.

It’s time.

My desk phone rings, pulling me out of my thoughts. “This is Charlotte,” I answer.

“Charlotte, where are we with hiring a new nurse for triage?” Lucia asks. Snarks is more like it.

“The ads are up online, as well as in the paper. You just gave me the go-ahead to post the job three days ago,” I remind her. Of course, my tone is kind, not that she deserves it.

“Get it done.” The line goes dead, and I roll my eyes.

“Who was that?” I hear a familiar voice. I look up to find Spencer standing just inside my doorway.

“Hey. What are you doing here?” Not that I’m not happy to see him. I just wasn’t expecting him.

“I had a meeting that got canceled, and I thought we could go to lunch.”

I glance down at the clock on my computer and see that it is, indeed, lunchtime. “I can’t believe it’s lunchtime already,” I tell him as I stand, grabbing my phone and purse. “What happened to the lunch we packed you this morning?” I ask, keeping my voice low.

“Not passing up time with you, Charlie girl.” He smiles, and my heart melts. Just like it does anytime this man is near me.

“I’m already yours,” I whisper. “You don’t have to charm me.”

“Damn right you’re mine.” He slaps my ass, just a love pat really, but it still shocks me. Luckily, we are both still in my office. I really need a different job. I have no desire to be the gossip at the water cooler.

“I still can’t believe you planned a picnic,” I tell him. He drove us to the deli on the edge of town, the one that seems to be our go-to place. Instead of grabbing our usual table in the back, Spencer asked them to make our food to go and drove us to the park. The weather is not sweltering, but it’s a warm fall day here in Charleston.

“I’m very romantic,” he counters cheekily.

“I know you are. I live with you, well, I mean not really.” I wave my hands in the air, flustered. “You know what I mean.”

“You could, you know. If you wanted to.”

I have to focus on swallowing the drink of lemonade and not choke as his words register. “I don’t know that we’re ready for that, Spencer.”

“We spend every night with each other. We don’t sleep without the other next to us. How are we not ready?”

I bite down on my bottom lip. “Because there are still things we haven’t shared, and maybe you might change your mind.”

His forehead wrinkles in confusion. “What the hell are you talking about?”

I exhale loudly. Might as well just put it out there. “Sex, Spencer. I’m talking about sex. We’ve been dancing around it for months.”

“Because that’s not what this is.” He motions between the two of us. “I needed you to know that.”

I let his reasoning sink in. “I still think that we should have… done that before we talk about moving in together. Sex changes things.”

“Not us.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I do know that.”

“Spencer.” I sigh.

“No. I know what’s going on in that pretty head of yours, Charlie, and you’re wrong, baby. You’re dead wrong. Sex is not going to change us, at least not the way that you think that it’s going to. It’s only going to bring us closer together.”

“You can’t be sure.”

“I’d bet my life on it.” I squeal when he reaches over and tugs me onto his lap. “You feel that?” He shifts his hips so that I can feel his hard cock pressing against my ass. “That’s just because I’m sitting next to you. Every fucking time, Charlotte. I crave you. There will never be a day that I don’t want you next to me. When we make love, that’s only going to make those feelings grow.”

I want to tell him that I’m in love with him. I want to tell him that I feel the same way, but I was worried that he wouldn’t. However, there’s still something I’m keeping from him. I won’t tell him how much I love him until there are no secrets between us. I feel as though I know Spencer well enough to understand that he’s going to be disappointed that I didn’t share that part of my life with him. He would have supported me through this process. I know he would have. I also wouldn’t put it past him to reach out and put a good word in for me. But I want this for me. I want to know that I’m the one who got me this job. Not my CEO boyfriend. The man who owns my heart.
