“My leg, my fucking leg.”

Pitman ducks inside the car and I’ve never been more grateful to see his ass. He’s around my size. He has a better chance of helping me out of here. I’m still trying to free myself of the harness.

“Dude, I need you to relax. I’m going to get you out,” Pitman says.

I swallow hard and nod, moving my hand out of the way so he can try to get me out. He tries, but the shit won’t budge. Tears spill from my eyes. I’m in so much fucking pain. I try to choke back my screams.

Luke Reynolds appears and tries to throw some blankets over the flames around my legs. It’s not enough. I can’t hold my cries back anymore. I feel like I’m dying. My skin is searing. I’ve never known pain like this.

“Fuck, fuck, I’m on fire,” I yell out as Pitman finally cuts me free.

“Help me get him out,” he barks to someone.

They drag me from the wreck as I scream my fucking head off. My entire right side feels like it’s on fire. Someone pats my body.

“Help, fucking help,” I think I cry out.

There’s so much pain I’m not sure if my mouth is even moving. It’s overpowering my will to help them get me the fuck away from this car. Something explodes, and just like that, it all goes black.

Chapter 3

In the Silence

Shawna

A month and two weeks later…

“What are you looking at?” I say to Ven as I walk into her room. “Oh, who’s that? He’s gorgeous.”

I don’t tell her I already know he’s the model from that race. I’ve been following him for a while. That crash was devastating to all his fans.

He has so much promise and he’s breathtaking. I loved him more with his natural dark hair and when it was longer. He had this sexy thing going on where one side was cut shorter, kind of like a fauxhawk or mullet.

Just not too close to his scalp, which brought something pretty to his features. I can’t explain it. His hair was so thick and lush. It stood out against those blue-gray eyes and long, thick lashes. His face is perfection—from his lips to his nose to his brows. I’ve often wondered why he went blond? It takes away from that perfect face.

My favorite picture of him is from that underwear ad with the black angel wings on his back as he rises from the water. His body is one thing, chiseled to perfection and underwear-ad worthy. However, it was the way his eyes popped as he stared intensely into the camera, with all that dark hair falling into his face, almost covering his left eye, that drew you in. Every time I look at it, I feel like he’s looking through me.

“This is my new best friend. He just doesn’t know it yet,” Skittles sings and turns to face me.

Her scar comes into view, causing me to reach up to touch mine. It’s insane that she would end up with one in almost the exact same spot. However, I was lucky enough to have a plastic surgeon see to mine.

If not for Ven, I don’t know what I would have done when I got this scar. She’s always been my hero. I smile because it would take more than a little scar to take away from her beauty.

“Really? You know him?”

“Sort of.” She shrugs. “Anyway, what brings you by?”

“Oh, you forgot,” I whisper.

“Oh shoot. Camera shopping. I didn’t forget, love. I just have a lot on my mind.”

“We don’t have to go. It’s fine.”

She stands from her desk and places her hands on her hips. I look down at her and smile. I wish I were as short as she is. Mayven has always been so pretty.

Tiny and curvy. I have the curves, but they don’t look the same in the tall package I come in. However, I’d never tell her that. Mayven has always made it her business to tell me to be proud of the skin I’m in.

I just don’t have her confidence. She and Lex have always had this thing I’m lacking. No matter how hard I try to be like them, it never works.

“Are you crazy? I’m so proud of you. You graduated with honors. I’m buying you that camera.

“I want to be able to say I bought you your first professional camera and I was a part of you becoming an award-winning photographer. Come on, let me get this wig on and I’m ready.”

“Okay, thanks. Um, your new bestie. He’s that model from that crash, right?”

“Yeah.”

“Did they let him out of the hospital?”

“No, they just woke him from the coma. He’s a bit grumpy when he’s lucid. It will be a few more weeks though, because of the break in his leg. I think that’s causing him more pain and discomfort.”
