“Shawnnie, what’s up? What was this asshole talking about?”

I laugh as I stop and place her on her feet. Turning, I look down at her as she listens. She searches my eyes, then a mischievous smile comes to her face.

“No, I didn’t know he helped you get the job,” she says.

She then covers the phone with her hand. “I forgive you and thank you but stop trying to get in my little cousin’s pants, asshole.”

There’s no real bite to her words, so I wink at her and tug her into my arms for a hug. She places her head against my chest and returns the embrace as she talks on the phone. I walk us back to the table we were sitting at as the sun beats down on my back.

Ivan, huh? Pack your fucking bags. Today is your last day, motherfucker.

Shawna

They sound like they’re having so much fun in Cancun. I wish I could be there. It was good to hear Joshua’s voice.

I love my new job, but this guy Ivan really has been making it uncomfortable for me. He creeps all the women out. I do my best never to be alone with him.

What I didn’t tell Josh is that he groped me last night. If my supervisor’s laugh hadn’t alerted Ivan that someone was on the way, I’d hate to think of what would have happened. My supervisor looked concerned when he found me, but I just rushed off, embarrassed that I’d gotten myself into such a situation.

“Shawna, we need you to ride out with us,” Terry, my supervisor, calls into my hut.

“Okay, I’m on my way.”

I check my camera bag and go to head out. I was supposed to have off this evening. Ivan was supposed to be shooting. That’s why I was making my calls back home and trying to catch up on emails.

“I’m here,” I say as I walk up to the Jeep the crew is waiting in.

I turn to see Ivan with his bags climbing into another vehicle. I knit my brows in confusion. He has all his gear and the luggage he came in with.

“Is everything okay?” I ask as I get into the Jeep.

“That guy pissed someone off. He got canned,” Arty, one of the other crew members, replies.

My mind goes back to the dark sound of Joshua’s voice when he had asked for the name of the guy giving me trouble. I shake the thought away. There’s no way he could have done this. He’s in Cancun with friends. We only spoke a few hours ago at most.

“Oh, that’s sad,” I mutter.

Not really, but I say it to be nice anyway. Everyone falls silent. I get the feeling I’m not the only one happy to see him go.

Chapter 16

Wrong Girl

Kelex

As I sit in the dark in Ivan Welsh’s home, I take a deep, calming breath. I’m not one to take your head off for no reason. You have to do something to provoke me. However, make no mistake. If you try me, if you poke the bear, I will erase you.

I’ve had to force myself from that truly dark place. The one that’s telling me to string this bastard up by his balls and filet his ass. That’s the type of rage I keep hidden. Instead, I’m going to make sure he dies slowly but painfully.

“What the fuck?”

Ivan gets his hand on the switch to turn on the lights and I pull the trigger. The light from the window behind me gives me all the illumination I need to hit my target just where I want.

Closing my eyes, I savor the sound of the bullets leaving my silencer. I stand, holster my gun, and fix my cuffs. Walking across the room to where Ivan is now gasping for air, I squat beside him once there.

“I had only planned for you to be fired. That was going to be as far as this went. That’s the call I made… to make that happen.”

I reach to slap his cheek as he tries to fill his lungs with air. I shouldn’t take as much joy in this as I am. No matter how much this disgusting piece of shit deserves this.

“You feel that? You’re about to die. You want to know why? Let me tell you why you’re going to hell, Ivan. I received a call and was told you touched not only what’s mine, but some of the others came forward once you were gone.

“You fucked with the wrong girl, Ivan. Your last two days were a gift. I needed that long to keep myself from peeling your skin from your body while you screamed for mercy. Now be good and allow me to listen to you take your last breath,” I say as I look him in his eyes.

About fifteen minutes go by as he struggles for air. Then I watch as the lights go off and he takes his last gasp. A sinister smile comes to my lips. I stand and leave the way I came, whistling as I go. See, I can keep the monster at bay.
