Jason grabbed onto my arm just behind my elbow and dragged me around Kage and toward him. He was quick, but Kage was quicker, and before I could even register what was happening, he was between us with my arm in one hand and Jason’s in the other.

“Whoa, whoa.” Kage looked at Jason with a mixture of surprise and concern and shook his head. “Come on, man. What are you doing?”

Jason didn’t reply to Kage. Instead, he leaned around him and fixed me with a look that was borderline homicidal. “Fuck you, you little cheating bitch. You don’t deserve even one crumb of this man’s attention. He’s been training his ass off for a solid week, trying to make a name for himself so he can get out from under that psycho uncle of his. He’s gone to bed alone every night while the rest of us got laid, and then you pull some shit like this?”

My entire body shook with jealousy and rage, but dammit, everything Jason said was true. I was worthless. Kage had just saved my ass, but I didn’t deserve to be saved. He should have let those guys mess me up.

“Calm down,” Kage told Jason. “We were broken up, alright? I broke up with him the night before camp started, so he wasn’t technically cheating. I just said that because I was upset. I appreciate you having my back tonight, but the rest of it is between Jamie and me.”

Jason had a pained expression. “Kage, I don’t like somebody fucking you over like this. I don’t care if you’re gay. I mean, I already suspected that anyway. You’re the best looking guy I know, and rich as fuck, but you’ve never had a girlfriend? No rocket science degree necessary, bro.”

“But you still kept trying to get me to hook up with the girls at the house.”

Jason shrugged. “I figured if I kept on about it, eventually you’d get tired of hearing it and tell me the truth. I mean, I can’t just come right out and call you a fag. Last time I did that, I ended up in the hospital.”

“That’s how that fight started? I thought it was over Vanessa.”

“It was. You told me to stay away from her, and I said something like, Why do you care, queer boy? You ain’t hitting that. And then you clocked me.”

Kage nodded. “Oh yeah, now I remember. There was no way I was letting you near her. You were a straight-up whore in high school.”

Jason smiled proudly. “Still am.”

“That’s fine. I don’t care if you bang all of the girls in the house ten times a day. Just as long as it doesn’t interfere with training, and you quit trying to force them on me.”

“Man, you don’t understand. I was serious about you needing to get laid, because you are way too intense right now. I swear to God I was about two seconds away from offering to blow you myself.”

“Take one for the team, huh?” Kage laughed. “Trust me, I don’t need your charity blow. I could have a guy on his knees in front of me in less than an hour if I wanted. And he’d be begging to take my cock, not offering it as a favor.”

“Damn, brother.” Jason’s face went crimson. “I didn’t need that much detail. A no thank you would have been good enough.”

“No, I think you need to realize. I’m not some sexually frustrated virgin you need to help get laid. I do what I want when I want. And judging from the way you just palm-raped my ass a minute ago, and the fact that you basically just offered to suck me off, I’d bet money I could do you if I wanted. But I don’t. So let’s fucking drop it, okay?”

“Okay, chill.” Jason held up his hands in surrender. “Just get my fucking condoms, and I’ll pick you up in the morning.” He scurried away toward the parking garage, collecting Steve on the way. “Biggest box they’ve got,” he called over his shoulder.

After Jason and Steve were gone, we walked casually down the sidewalk side-by-side, as if nothing horrible had just happened. I was just counting my lucky stars that there hadn’t been a big scene, when Kage whirled on me and pushed me, nearly taking me off my feet.

“What the hell were you thinking?” he demanded. “There is no telling what might have happened to you if we hadn’t found you when we did. If Steve hadn’t texted me.”

I sent Steve a silent thank you for being a sneaky back-stabber and kept walking, unable to look Kage in the eye.

“I’m sorry. I was just being stupid.”

“You’re damn right you were being stupid.”

“Well, you weren’t around, so…”

His eyes narrowed dangerously. “I was training. You know that.”

“You told me you were done with me. You didn’t even want to see me to get your stuff back. I didn’t know what else to do.”
