“They won’t find me,” he said, unconcerned. “First of all, the car and house are in Doug Hammond’s name, not mine. As for the home I bought . . . I purchased it under a shell corporation. My identity isn’t attached to the deed.”

Jesus. Smart and insane were not a good combination.

Tucking his gun behind his back, in the waistband of his jeans, he picked up a long plastic zip tie from the coffee table, where there was also a large roll of duct tape. “Turn around and put your hands behind your back.”

Realizing what he intended to do, Skye knew she had to stop arguing with him and become the agreeable wife he wanted. She needed to show him how cooperative she could be because having her arms restrained would limit her ability to fight or escape if the opportunity arose.

She didn’t turn around, but instead placed a hand on his chest and gave him a soft, sweet, docile look, forcing herself to be seductive despite the need to throw up. “You know, it doesn’t have to be this way.”

He lifted a dark brow, suddenly interested. Being the narcissist that he was, of course he’d believe she still wanted him. “What way can it be?” he asked.

She swallowed back the bile rising in her throat and let a sultry smile curve her lips. “Like . . . old times.”

His eyes lit up at the offer. “Prove it,” he said.

She bit her bottom lip, all for show. “How about we have dinner first?” she asked, trying to buy time. “Then I’ll do whatever you want to prove myself to you.”

“Okay . . . I bought some groceries.” He took hold of his gun again, removing her ability to reach for the weapon. “Let’s go. Kitchen’s straight that way.” He gestured for her to walk ahead of him and she did as he followed behind, leaving her aware of the gun he held. “As you know, I’m not much of a cook,” he said, conversationally. “But I figure a frozen pizza will get us by.”

Her stomach roiled . . . from her being captive or her baby rejecting the suggestion of gross cardboard pizza, she wasn’t sure. “Okay, that sounds fantastic.”

He sat down at a small table in a nook area where he could keep an eye on her. “Go ahead and fix us dinner,” he said.

She retrieved the pizza and pre-heated the oven. She opened drawers under the pretense of trying to find utensils and cookware, then … BINGO. She came across a butcher’s block of knives on the counter.

She continued her dinner prep, waiting until Jack glanced down at his phone before palming one of the serrated knives and sliding it into the pocket of her dress. The thought of being caught with the weapon made her as sick as the idea of sliding it into his skin, but she’d do anything she had to in order to survive.

Once the pizza was in the oven, Jack stood back up, leaving the gun on the table as he approached her, and she immediately recognized the perverse glint in his eyes that made dread slide through her veins.

“How much time do we have?” he asked, crowding her against the counter and pinning her in with his hands braced at her sides. “About fifteen minutes before the pizza is done?”

She nodded. “Yes.”

He pressed in close, crudely rubbing his erection against her. “More than enough time for you to get on your knees and prove what a loyal wife you’re going to be.”

Oh, God, she couldn’t. “Jack . . .”

His hand shot out and gripped her throat until she could barely breathe, his eyes blazing with malice. “Fucking do it, Skye,” he ordered in that harsh, mean tone that had always instilled fear in her. “Or trust me, it’s going to end up being much worse for you.”

She didn’t doubt him for a second, because she’d seen that side of him. “Okay,” she wheezed, trying to keep from passing out.

He released her, fully expecting her to obediently drop to the floor and suck his cock. He stepped back, giving her more than enough room to execute her alternative plan. She placed her hands on his shoulders, as if she was going to lift up and kiss him. Instead, she gripped tight, raised her leg, and before he realized her intent, drove her knee fast and hard, straight into his balls, just as Spencer had taught her.

He howled in pain, bending over as he grabbed onto his dick with one hand, while attempting to grab her with the other. His objective was to stop her from running around him but she had stronger goals. Knowing her and her baby’s lives were at stake, she retrieved the knife from her pocket and drove it into the side of his neck.
