She had taken a special liking to her brother and proclaimed him hers. I guess she thought he was one of her dolls.

“Look at her Gia, she’s you all over.”

“It’s too early to tell Evan.” She must’ve said that to me ten times in the last few hours but I know what I see.

I was too excited to sleep so I spent the night sitting up in my chair next to her bed with one or the other of my children in my arms.

They were going home tomorrow and I had given Gavin the task of getting things ready for our return.

Since we’d only planned for one child, we needed to get another set of everything. Thankfully Celia and mom had helped her pick out the stuff for the nursery and knew where to get what was needed.

I didn’t sleep a wink the first few days after they were born, too worried about something going wrong.

The doctor claimed that they were all fine but what the hell does she know, she didn’t even know my wife was carrying twins for fuck sake.

I didn’t trust anyone to take care of them so I did it myself. By day three I crashed hard, the adrenaline finally giving out. I was overtired and stressed, but it turned out to be the best thing that could’ve happened to me.

Because I was so fixated on Gia and the babies, not to mention taking care of Amber, I’d neglected myself.

Apparently not eating and staying up for that many hours at a stretch was not a good idea. I’d been going on adrenaline thinking that I had everything under control, but I was wrong.

I’d just put my son down after taking him from his mother who’d fed the little pig. Our daughter had already been fed and put back in the bassinet their mother insisted on keeping next to our bed.

I turned back to go to her and the room spun. I heard her scream of terror before I hit the floor. What the fuck?

I woke up in a hospital bed with my wife crying next to me. My first thought was that she must be scared out of her fucking mind.

“Gia.” My voice came out in a hoarse croak. My whole body ached and there were drummers playing the banjo in my head.

“Gia.” I had to call her name again because she didn’t hear me the first time. Her head flew up from where it had been laying on my chest and her eyes found mine. Her poor little face was drenched in tears.

I pulled her up onto the bed next to me and wrapped my arms around her. “It’s okay baby I’m awake.” Her body trembled and she clutched at me. Her fear was real and I remembered her words from that night.

“Oh Evan I was so scared, please don’t leave me.” Her words were shaky and warbled as she fought to get them out. “I love you, I love you so much please…”

I held her head to my chest and closed my eyes. The joy that rushed through me overshadowed the pain. “Oh baby.” I rocked her in my arms, speaking to her gently, soothingly.

She shook so hard I had to hold on tight before she fell off the bed. “Baby I’m not going anywhere, I’m fine just a little tired is all.”

I was afraid that she was going to be the one needing medical attention if she didn’t calm down. “Look at me.” I turned her face to mine.

“I’m never going to leave you, understand? I’m going to be here with you and our children for a long-long time.”

Just then the doctor came in and reassured her that I was indeed fine and it wasn’t a heart attack like she’d feared.

Once he left and she was calm again I laid back with her in my arms. “Who’s looking after our children?”

“Your whole family has been taking turns going back and forth between here and there. The doctor said they want to keep you here overnight until you’re no longer dehydrated. What were you thinking Evan? How could you stay up all that time?”

“I wasn’t tired, I needed to make sure that you and our babies were okay.”

“Why, is something wrong that you’re not telling me?”

“No, you’re all perfectly fine, but I don’t want anything to happen to any of you.”

“Nothing’s going to happen to us we’re fine.”

“I know that now but I was still afraid of something going wrong.”

“You were afraid for nothing and made yourself sick. What would we do if something happened to you?”

“Nothing’s going to happen to me remember? The doctor just gave me a clean bill of health, by the way I’m not staying here.”

“What? you have to.”

“No I don’t.” I got out of the bed and found my clothes. She argued with me the whole time and even called in the nurses who had no luck keeping me there.
