“Anything,” he said. “I mean, I like movies. But the company is the most important part of that equation, isn’t it?”

“Agreed.”

The idea of being in a dark theater with Jason was incredibly intriguing to me. Especially if it was something that didn’t have a large audience. Something where no one would notice two people in the back row, their hands hidden from view and their tongues buried in each other’s mouths.

“I’ll check what’s playing when I get home. Maybe we can go see a movie for our next date,” he said.

“Maybe,” I said. “Or we could do something else. I’m down for whatever.”

“That’s a pretty wide set of options you’re committing yourself to,” he said, grinning devilishly.

I matched his expression. It was exactly what I meant.

“Point remains,” I said. “Like you said, it’s about the company, right?”

“Right,” he said.

Turning, we started heading down the long driveway toward the trailer. Mentally, I was at war with myself. I knew I wanted to make a move but didn’t know how far I should go. Or if I should do it at all. We were adults. Adults didn’t have to play by some magic rulebook teenagers felt like they were supposed to. If I wanted to kiss him, I could. If I wanted to have him come back into the trailer with me for one more drink, I could. If I wanted him to bend me over the hood of his truck… well, I wasn’t tall enough, but the point was, I could do it if I wanted to.

“Here we are,” he said as he pulled the truck up close to the trailer. “Hang on a second.”

He hopped out, and like the gentleman he had been all night, he came over to my side and opened the door again. I slipped out and landed weirdly on the ground, tripping a bit. Either I was a genius and did it on purpose, or the universe gave me a little push. I ended up with Jason’s arms around me, righting me on my feet.

Our bodies were so close. I could feel his heartbeat against my chest. His cologne was suddenly the only thing I could smell anymore. It was intoxicating. And at my stomach, a thick bulge pressed against the seam of his jeans. I threw caution to the wind.

My lips met his, and I wrapped my arms around his neck. He groaned a little into it, and I copied it, marveling at how hot it was to hear his groaning grunt as his body pressed against mine. The kiss itself was simple and sweet, but there was no denying the heat behind it. As I pulled away, his eyes were wide and surprised but slowly turning to an expression of intense passion.

I couldn’t control myself anymore.

“Do you want to come inside?” I asked, my fingers now in his shirt, balling it up in my palms and looking up into his eyes.

He grinned.

“I would love to,” he said, “but not tonight. I’m afraid I might have ordered you too many cosmos.”

My heart fell into my stomach. I let go of his shirt and suddenly felt like the biggest idiot in the world.

“How about this. I’ll text you tomorrow. If you still want me to come over and help you with the land, I will. We can take all this from there.”

I was so embarrassed, but I nodded. I couldn’t believe I was so forward. Or that he was such a gentleman about it. There was no weakness in him and no lack of passion in his expression. He looked truly sad to say no, but he turned me away, nonetheless.

“Tomorrow, then,” I said. “Good night, Jason.”

“Good night, Beth Ann.”

His headlights stayed on until I was safely inside and had the door shut. Immediately, I threw myself onto the couch and pitied myself for my actions. How silly of me. How out of character to just throw myself at someone like that. Then for him to turn me down was one of the most unexpected and embarrassing things I had ever had happen.

Yet.

He was clearly attracted to me. The bulge in his jeans was proof enough, but the way he didn’t change the intensity in his eyes when he looked at me was another. He wanted me. He just wanted to make sure he was being a stand-up guy about it. He wanted to make sure I was safe and that when I made a decision to bring him inside, I was sober and knew that the decision was my own.

The more I thought about it, the hotter it got. He was a real gentleman. I didn’t think they existed anymore. He didn’t expect anything. He didn’t take advantage of me. But he made sure I knew how much he wanted to see me again.

Making a promise to myself to call him tomorrow as soon as I knew what to say to him, I made a beeline for the bathroom. I pulled off the clothes from the night, but my body tingled. I couldn’t stand the idea of wearing anything else. I didn’t want them restricting me.
