I was stunned in my silence. “I never knew this…”

“Another reason I’m not interested in having a relationship.” He shook his head. “To this day, it’s still a problem. I changed distributors a few times, but they weren’t as reliable, and then I decided to give Axel a try, even though he’s not ideal.”

“Why isn’t he ideal?” I blurted, knowing I shouldn’t show too much interest.

My father studied me for a moment. “Because I don’t like him.”

My heart clenched before it dropped. I wanted to press for more information, but I feared too much curiosity would tip him off.

“Keep your personal life separate from your professional life—that’s the moral of the story. I think anyone in any industry will tell you the exact same thing.”

I’d just walked into the kitchen when my phone lit up with a message.

I miss you, Pretty. I heard his voice in my head as I read the message. Then I remembered the way his thick arms felt wrapped around my body, the way they cocooned me in their warmth. He had such a powerful kiss, the one that stole my breath and made me gasp for air.

Are you talking to me or my pussy? I could picture the smirk on his face as he read that.

Both.

I typed a message back then deleted it. My father’s words had haunted me ever since he’d spoken them. The guilt was constricting, because if my foolish mistakes affected him, I’d feel like shit.

Speak your mind, Pretty. He must have seen the three little dots and expected a message, but then they disappeared instead.

I felt like a coward for doing this over text, but we’d only slept together twice, so we weren’t serious enough to warrant a face-to-face conversation either. I’ve given it some thought…and this is a bad idea. We should stop before it gets complicated.

I stared at the screen and waited for the three dots to appear.

They never did.

I expected pushback. An argument. Maybe even a dick pic. But nothing happened.

I should be relieved that it ended so easily, but a part of me felt disappointed.

I continued to raid my kitchen and look for something to eat. I hadn’t been to the market in a while because I’d been too busy, but I was also too cheap to order out. There was only a carton of milk in the fridge and a box of cereal in the cupboard, so I decided to eat a four-year-old’s lunch.

I sat on the couch and ate in front of the TV, and out of nowhere, the front door flew open.

I grabbed the gun strapped underneath the end table and jumped to my feet, pointing it straight at the intruder who’d barged into my apartment.

But it was Axel—and he wasn’t the least bit startled by the gun.

He shut the door behind him then walked up to me, his blue eyes livid. “You think a text will get rid of me?” He took the gun out of my hand and set it down on the end table. “And as sexy as it is to see you point this at me, make sure the safety is off next time.”

“How did you know—”

“Because I do.” He stared me down with a burning hostility. “Welcome to an adult conversation, where we speak face-to-face like fucking grown-ups.” He moved closer to me. “You got something to say to me?”

I immediately stepped back, intimidated by this version of Axel that I’d never met. He was charming, with a smile that made my panties melt right down my legs, a brightness in his eyes that sparkled on the darkest night. But now…he was someone else entirely.

He remained in my face, his angry eyes flashing back and forth between mine. “That’s what I thought.” He grabbed the front of my shirt then tugged me into him, forcing our lips together for a crushing kiss. Then he abruptly let me go. “Now, undress for me.” He dropped onto the couch, knees wide apart, still pissed off. “Now.”

“You don’t get to boss me around—”

“I just did.” He snapped his fingers so I would get on with it.

“Don’t you dare snap your fingers at me—”

“You want to shut me up? Then sit on my face.”

I fell silent, because anytime that sexy mouth was on me, I was in paradise. He fucked me better than any man ever had. At first, I’d thought it was just a fluke, that it was hot because it was new, but he delivered every single time…all night long.

He looked me right in the eye then snapped his fingers.

I was in my pajamas, wearing silk pajama shorts and a camisole. It was deep purple and shiny, barely covering much because it was so warm in the summertime. I didn’t wear makeup because I’d washed it off the second I got home, but Axel continued to look at me like I was the finest piece of ass he’d ever seen.
