Iron

I wake up the next morning with another hangover. I stayed the whole night in my room at the clubhouse instead of going home. I sit on the edge of the bed with my head in my hands. The drinking is getting out of hand. I usually don’t drink so much that I have a hangover, but lately images of Maddy in her hardware store jeans and shirt and her conservative clothes when she isn’t working has been playing havoc with me.

A fantasy of messing up Maddy’s hair and kissing her full lips until they are swollen crosses my mind every time I’ve been approached by a club sweet butt, and none of them can compare to Maddy.

Maddy is the kind of girl you can count on. If she says she is going to do something, she follows through. It was one of those things I admired about her when we were growing up. She did some things that I knew she was afraid to do, but she did them anyway because she said she would. And just knowing how sweet but fierce she is makes me ache for her more than ever.

I stretch my arms over my head and wince before grabbing at my ribs. Early last night we went with the crew to run the Fallen Kings out of our territory. Ever since a few months ago when we tipped off the police and had their clubhouse raided, they’ve been gunning for us. They’ve even attempted to send a spy in on us. Tara tried to infiltrate the club as a sweet butt, and she may have fooled a few of the guys, but Sniper, Brick, and Rancher were on to her quick. We seemed to have gotten there at the right time because their leader, Crater, was already down on his knees in the parking lot. It was a quick ass kicking, and even though Crater’s gang tried to come to his defense, it was useless. We were back to the clubhouse in enough time for the party to commence and for me to hide out in my room.

I almost thought I’d saw Maddy’s car last night at the trailer park, but I shut that down quick. Maddy knows not to go to that part of town, plus it seems that I’m seeing Maddy all the time now, even when she’s nowhere around. It’s like all I do is think of her and I always think I see her. Plus, there’s no way she would be hanging out at the Fallen Kings’ trailer park. She’s too high class for that. Too high class for me.

Oh well, she’s too good for me, and I need to get my shit together and stop daydreamin’ about her.

I get through almost a full day of work and decide to go downtown. I make the excuse we need something from the hardware store, but I know the truth. I’m still upset about the way I talked to Maddy yesterday, and guilt is bringing me here to make it right. I know I can’t have her, but I don’t want her to hate me.

“Hey, Mr. Sanders,” I call to him and look around the store. “Where’s Maddy?” I ask him.

Mr. Sanders comes toward me, shaking his head. “She called in sick.”

Fuck! I knew I upset her yesterday, but I thought for sure she was okay. “Did she say what was wrong with her?” I ask him, trying to hide the guilt from my voice.

He just shrugs his shoulders. “Migraine… but—”

“But what?” I ask him, my shoulders tense.

His forehead creases. “I don’t know. I went over there at lunch time but she refused to answer the door… something about being in the dark because of her head. But I don’t know. She assured me she was all right, so maybe I’m making something out of nothing.”

I flex my hands at my sides. It sounds suspicious to me. Some dipshit lowlife must have wormed his way into her bed last night and she doesn’t want her dad to catch her with the loser.

I stride toward the door and call over my shoulder. “I’ll go check on her.”

Maddy

Knock. Knock.

The sound of the front door has me rolling my eyes. My dad again.

But when the sounds get harder and more persistent, I start to get scared. Could the Fallen Kings have found me? I tiptoe to the front door and look through the peephole. Iron is at my door. He’s leaning on it, a hand on each side of it, and I swear it looks like he’s looking straight at me through the hole in the door. “What is it, Iron? I’m about to lie down for a nap.”

“Open the door.”

He’s looking fiercely at the door and I can’t help but wonder, why does he have to be so damn hot?
