The doors open, and Roman breathes a sigh of relief. “I thought I’d never make it.”
“Roman,” I grunt, pain shooting through me. He rushes to my side, grabbing my hand so that I can squeeze his. “I love you,” I grit out.
“I love you too.”
“The contractions are getting closer. It looks like this little one is ready to come out.” The pushing begins, and I’m delirious by the time I finally hear her cries. They’re music to my ears.
“Happy Anniversary,” Roman whispers.
“The best gift I could ever ask for,” I sob as they bring our little girl onto my chest.
“Hi, little Rachel,” Roman coos. I can’t wait for my mother to see her. “Daddy’s new princess.”
“Yes, you are,” I whisper. She’s going to be spoiled like crazy and well-protected.
After they clean the baby and me up, Roman ushers in our family. Junior is studying in London so he’ll be here next week when the term ends, but we video chat with him so he can meet his baby sister.
“She’s perfect,” he says. “Dad, there’s plenty of castles here.”
“Sounds wise, son.”
“Don’t worry, she’s going to have more security than Mom does,” Alex, my youngest son, says.
Our parents are on their way from Florida as we speak. They weren’t scheduled to leave until tomorrow, but Roman texted his father that the jet’s on standby. They boarded and will be here in three hours. I can’t wait for our whole family to be together again.
Everyone stays just another fifteen minutes because I need to feed the baby and rest, but Roman doesn’t leave my side. “I’m so lucky you love me, Amelia. You’re my greatest treasure, my best friend. The love of my life. Thank you.”
