“Well, like I said—” The blow I sent to his gut cut him off mid-sentence.
“What was that?” I taunted as I pulled my nine from my ankle holster and proceeded to pistol-whip his ass. “Huh? I can’t hear you, big homie. Can you repeat that? You not gone pay who?”
Blood spurted from his mouth and wounds, splattering my uniform and skin. He was easily twice my size, and still, I kicked his ass all over the pavement. I wasn’t even close to being winded or getting my point across when it happened.
The wind shifted, bringing the intoxicating scent of oranges and vanilla. It cut through the chemicals polluting the city, the copper smell of blood leaking from Miller, and the motor oil and exhaust clinging to my clothes and skin.
Everything slowed and I stopped suddenly, feeling the hair on my nape and arms rise.
But not just that, no.
I could have sworn a gentle voice whispered in my ear.
As real as the phantom fingers gripping my chin and guiding my gaze away from the bloodied lump to where the girl with waist-length dreads and some kind of gold head chain resting on her neat locks and forehead like a crown stood outside the gates watching me. Our gazes locked, and only one word came to mind in the space of the breath that followed.
Queen.
My entire body seemed to tremble as adrenaline coursed through me, and my body’s temperature plunged to terrifying depths, making my skin tighten and bumps appear along my arms. It took me a moment longer to realize that was a first-ever chill creeping down my fucking spine.
I glared at the girl who caused it all.
Her delicate brown fingers were wrapped around the metal bars of the gate as her attention returned once more to the man lying at my feet. I waited for her to flinch, scream, and run away from the gory scene I’d created.
She didn’t.
Her head cocked to the side curiously, and suddenly, I was contemplating some wild shit—like asking for her name and number.
Savannah didn’t even have that luxury, and I’d been fucking her for years. Her only way of contacting me was by blowing up my DMs.
My reaction to this girl was something I could honestly say I’d never experienced before. I couldn’t put a name on it, which made me trust the feeling even less.
She looked young—too fucking young—even from this distance.
Her jet-black dreads framed the sides of her diamond-shaped face and hugged her breasts while sweeping her lower back. Even her deep brown skin had a baby-soft glow to it, and I licked my lips as I imagined sucking and fucking and abusing every one of her holes.
I couldn’t make out the rest of her features from this far away, but my dick had already decided it liked what it saw. Even now, my anger ebbed as an uncharacteristic calm washed over me like a wave. I wanted to snatch her nosy ass up before she realized she was staring down the mouth of a lion and disappeared forever.
The fuck?
“Nah,” I whispered to myself aloud. I didn’t like what this weirdo and her staring problem were doing to me. I knew Black didn’t crack, but she couldn’t be older than sixteen if she were a day.
She had to go.
“Ah! Help! Ahhh!” Miller suddenly screamed. I’d forgotten about his ass.
“Shut the fuck up.” I sent one last blow to his temple, knocking him out cold.
Straightening, I slowly ate up the distance between this strange girl, who still hadn’t moved, and me. I waited for her to show some sign of fear, but none came—not even when I was close enough to make out the small milky white patches of skin that looked like it had lost its pigment. The star-shaped patches traveled from the right side of her lower jaw, across her small nose, and stopped just above her left brow in a pattern that gave me pause before I shook it off as a coincidence.
I didn’t know if she was frozen in terror or just weird as fuck, but I was only two strides away when I could no longer hold back.
I had to speak to her.
If only to satisfy this fierce and vicious need to hear her voice.
Even though that phantom voice from before warned me this moment was crucial, I only spared a second to think about what I would say to her, what my first words to this unknown girl who had provoked such a visceral reaction from me would be before I let them free.
“What the fuck are you looking at?”
Two Kings found, two more to hunt.
That was my last coherent thought before I saw him.
My brain told me to run, but my feet wouldn’t move. Maybe some intrinsic part of me knew what was happening. He stepped out of the shadows that the cluster of clouds looming above had made as if it had known he was moments away from committing murder and sought to shield him from prying eyes.
