“What do you want to do?” Harlow asked.

“I have no idea.”

Taking Hailey’s hand, she decided the best way to handle this was to simply walk around the fair. She didn’t even bother looking toward the picnic area. She and Hailey hadn’t packed any lunch. They were either going to enjoy snacks or go out to lunch.

Hailey had mentioned finding a new vegan restaurant not too far, about a thirty-minute drive from Fort Clover, that they were going to check out. It was so sweet of Hailey to think of that.

Her friend and roommate was even learning to cook as well. Harlow helped, and she provided all the baked goods. Just thinking about baking made her miss Ava. She hadn’t seen her friend in so long, nor had she seen Raven either, or Abriana, for that matter.

They hadn’t come into the beauty parlor, nor had she seen them randomly in the street. She didn’t know if her brother had warned them not to get involved with her. Big Dick could be that petty, but she hoped he wasn’t.

Moving their way through the maze of people, and looking at the rides, Harlow felt herself relaxing. She knew the Hell’s Bastards MC would be around, they always were at these events, but she hadn’t seen a single one. It had been a short while since she had seen Hunter as well, which was also a welcome relief.

After taking Hailey around all the rides, Harlow allowed her to choose what they did. The first ride was scary for Harlow. She wasn’t big on heights, but she was big on facing her fears, so she climbed right on once it was their turn. There were a lot of people wanting to get on. It was the kind of ride that went up into the sky and held you there, rocking back and forth.

Hailey let out a squeal lifting her arms in the air while Harlow held on for dear life, and let out a scream, even though her stomach turned over.

Once the ride was over, she was tempted to collapse and kiss the ground, but she kept it together. It would seem Hailey was a bit of an adrenaline junkie and she loved the fast rides that flipped her in the air and made her scream. After the sixth ride, Harlow was close to throwing up, but Hailey went straight to the fun house.

“I’ve seen these on a lot of horror movies and they always look so cool,” Hailey said. “Meet you on the other side.”

Harlow laughed but didn’t go chasing after Hailey. She needed a few minutes to gain her composure and get herself together.

The fun house was always fun, at least to her. She took it slow and steady, weaving her way through the mirrors, and then stepping out, going through the tunnel. As she came out of the tunnel that turned, she nearly ran into the back of someone.

“Sorry,” she said, putting a hand on his back and giving him some space.

“Harlow?”

She lifted her head and saw one of Big Dick’s old friend’s brothers. “Andrew?”

“Ah, you remembered,” he said, laughing.

Andrew was the brother of an asshole, who she couldn’t remember. Big Dick and the other guy would take their little sibling along together, and she would have to hang out with Andrew, even though he was older than her.

“Yeah, it’s not every day that a fifteen-year-old plays dolls to help entertain a brother’s best friend’s sister.” She frowned. “I don’t even know if that made any kind of sense. It did in my head.”

“Yeah, it did in mine as well.”

They both laughed.

“I thought you had left town,” Harlow said.

“I did. I left and did some exploring, and before I know it, I was homesick, and I got back to town a couple of months ago.”

“Months ago? I haven’t seen you around.”

“I’ve been working in my dad’s shop.”

She clicked her fingers. “I can’t remember what it is.”

Andrew laughed. “He’s a repairman and a plumber.”

“You’re a plumber?”

“And electrician, fully trained and ready to handle most homey problems,” Andrew said, making her laugh.

“Keep it moving,” someone said behind her. She hadn’t even realized the line had been moving.

“So, are you in the fun house on a date?” she asked.

Andrew had always been nice. She hadn’t thought about him in so long. He’d always been patient with her, never yelling. Even when his brother was being a dick and talking about playing with dolls, it didn’t stop him.

“Nah, I was just having a little fun to be honest. Also, my niece loves the fun house and I offered to take her.”

“Your niece?”

“Yeah, my brother had a kid with the girl he was dating at school.”

“Holy crap, I didn’t even know your brother was dating anyone. He was so…” She didn’t want to be rude to him, but his brother hadn’t been a nice person. From what she could remember, from the arguments with her brother and parents, he’d been a no-good waste of space. There had been a lot of colorful words to describe Andrew’s brother.
