Miranda’s hand flies to her mouth, covering it with a gasp. “No.”

I nod solemnly. “Yes. Oh yes, I did.”

“Stop.”

“My lips to God's ears.”

Miranda’s lips part. “Then what?”

“Then he put his hands on my shoulders, looked into my eyes, and said, real quiet like, ‘Then you’re about to be real disappointed darlin’ ’cause I’m not Drew. I’m Drake.’” I mimic his deep baritone timbre. “He tapped on his front tooth where the gap was, then said, “Don’t worry, kid, I won’t say nothin’.” I gulp down the horrible memory, then gulp down more wine. “To this day, I’m thinkin’ he kept his promise because my brother’s never said a peep about it or teased me, and Drew acts the same way around me he always has.” I shrug. “So yeah. That’s the story.”

“Holy shit, Tess. That’s a doozy.”

“You’re tellin’ me.” I sigh loudly.

Glumly.

“Alright,” Miranda allows, avoiding my gaze. “I take back everything I said about going for it. Maybe don’t go for him. Go for someone else.”

My thoughts exactly.

DEAR DIARY…

I haven’t written in a few days because I’ve been so busy. Finally had my friends over last night and we stayed up until 2 talking about school and boys, ha ha. Bev is dating Justin Wilder and he tried kissing her under the bleachers at the football game and we were all basically FREAKING OUT. She said he tried sticking his tongue in her mouth and it was disgusting, so we sat up watching videos on YouTube about how to kiss and make out.

We were dying laughing, it was hilarious.

Then Bev FaceTimed him and broke up with him because she doesn’t have time to teach a teenage boy how to kiss and because he went and told all his friends she stuck her tongue down his throat. But boy he got mad when she called him while she had a room full of her friends instead of in private, but like—we tell each other everything so what difference does it make? Guys are so dumb.

Grady was home and kept coming into the living room where we were sleeping. I think he has a crush on Tosha which is SO WEIRD. He better stay away from my friends, they are OFF. LIMITS. PERIOD! The thought of him dating one of my friends is disgusting and plus she’s like 3 years younger, GO AWAY GRADY. **GAG**

Anyway.

Going to bed, I have a student council meeting in the morning before school and Mom said she’d take me for a Pumpkin Spice Latte beforehand. I’m SO BASIC ha!

CHAPTER 5

DREW

DO YOU BELIEVE IN LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT, OR SHOULD I WALK BY AGAIN?

When Grady told me he was having a few people over, I assumed he meant like five or six. I definitely wasn’t thinking it would be ten or twenty or the full house surrounding me now.

Holy shit.

They party like they’re in College Town, USA, and this is a fraternity house.

“Did you invite all the neighbors so they don’t call the cops on you later?” I ask him as I heft the newly delivered keg onto the back porch. I lift it as if it weighs nothing.

“No. Should I have?”

Is he for real? “Dude, yes, you should have invited the neighbors. At least some of them might show up, and the other half won’t be surprised when it gets loud. You said you were only having a few people over…”

He shrugs like it’s no big deal. “I can’t help it if word spreads.”

Shit.

Do I seriously want to be here when this party gets busted?

Because it’s going to, and I’ll be standing here with my hand on my dick as the cops bust us for having too many people at Grady’s house while families in the neighborhood try to sleep and relax at home.

He eyeballs me. “You sound like someone’s mama. You really did need a break, bro.”

He’s not wrong. On either count.

Honest to God there are people everywhere, none of whom I know besides Lucas, Debts—one of our high school buddies who play football in Kentucky—his girlfriend, Deb, and like four other people.

Plus Tess.

I haven’t seen her yet, but her best friend, Miranda, came up and introduced herself the minute they walked through the door. She welcomed me to town, said she’d heard a lot about me, and couldn’t wait for the bachelorette party tomorrow night.

The guy with her? Looks as if he were auditioning for a punk metal band after party; like he hangs out in dark basements and does dungeon tours on the weekends.

But I digress.

Plunking the keg down, I wipe my hands on the palm of my jeans, adjusting it so it’s in a secure spot and not going to roll back down the steps should someone bump or stumble into it.

Grady adds the hose spigot gadget, and we’re off to the races.

When I straighten, my hands get stuffed in my pockets.
