I take a step toward him, reaching for his hand. "Drew, I know you need time to process all of this. But please, don't shut me out completely. Our baby deserves to have both of us in their life."

“Our baby.” He looks at me, his gaze searching mine for some sign of sincerity. "Our baby? Ha. I need time, Tess. This is a lot to take in."

I nod, my heart heavy but hopeful. "Take the time you need, Drew. Just know that I never meant for any of this to happen like this. I never wanted to hurt you."

As I utter those words, the dream begins to fade, slipping through my fingers like sand.

Our baby? Ha.

“Tess, wake up. You’re having a dream.”

The voice sounds familiar and a lot like Miranda’s, and when I finally open my eyes, it’s pitch black in her bedroom.

“You were having a dream.” There’s a cold cloth being laid over my forehead. “Ugh, you’re so warm. I’m going to turn the fan on.”

The mattress moves when she rises from the bed to cross the room.

I can only nod, slowly falling back asleep.

DEAR DIARY…

Turns out, Frank Phillips was the only guy to ask me to Prom.

Go figure, right?

The last guy on earth I wanted to go with is the only guy who asked and obviously I said yes. It’s not like a had a choice. The good news is, I had a decent time and he didn’t try anything—I was basically terrified the entire time that Frank was going to kiss me, or worse, try to finger me or whatever. Or maybe I’ve seen too many movies where all the guy is trying to do at Prom is get laid, but Frank’s not like that. I actually think he was afraid to touch me. During pictures, his mom made him put his arm around me and SHE was the one who handed me the bouquet of flowers (that matched my dress, SQUEE) because he was dying inside. It was pretty cute and I forgave him for being an asshole about the Promposal thing—which he did end up doing, although it was lame and cliché and one of those poster boards with a cheesey saying on it **eye roll**

We went to dinner with his group of friends, most of them football players, obviously, all of them in our grade. Diary I have a confession to make that’s going to make me sound like the WORST DATE EVER: I looked for Drew Colter all night, thinking maybe he’d be there even though Grady had told me his dad didn’t let them go to dances, not even homecoming. God if I had a father like that, ugh. I’ve heard Dad call Mr Colter a raging prick and heard both my parents blast him for being demanding but never really around? Which makes no sense to me. How can a dad be controlling when he travels for work and doesn’t show up for anything? But…it’s not my place to judge, you know? Also, I’m GLAD Drew wasn’t there because I had a DATE, and who wants a date hanging around when you’re trying to get the love of your life to pay attention to you??? Not me.

Okay diary, time for bed.

XOXOXO Tess

CHAPTER 39

DREW

THE SADDEST THING ABOUT BETRAYAL IS THAT IT NEVER COMES FROM YOUR ENEMIES.

“So what are you going to do? You have to find out if this is legit or not.”

I’m on a weight bench in the gym, staring at myself in the mirror as my brother stands behind me, ready to spot me.

“I don’t know.”

“Have you talked to Eli about this?”

Eli is his agent. I haven’t signed with one yet, but I should. The only thing holding me back is the fact that I’m not sure if playing professionally is what I want to do.

On the other hand, I’m not sure if I’m qualified to do anything else with my life.

“Yes. He told me I need to issue a statement to SportsCenter so they can get my side of the story.”

Drake shifts his stance on the balls of his feet. “And what is your side of the story?”

I lay on the bench, ready for him to hand me the weights. “My side is that I have no idea if any of it is true, as I haven’t heard shit from Grady, and the last time I got a text from Tess, she was actin’ like everything was fine, and she was just stressed about school.”

“So like—he wants you to issue a denial?”

“Basically.”

Which I think would be kind of a dick thing to do. Jesus, what if she is pregnant and it’s mine, and I speak out in public about it, telling the whole world it couldn’t possibly be mine. Wouldn’t that embarrass her? And make things worse?

Too bad she isn’t contacting me.
