Sky shot upright from his deep slouch and leaned into Nolan. “No! Absolutely not! You’ve been given the most amazing gift.”

“Okay, now that we’re alone, can you tell me who this Zelda is? Why did everyone lose their mind as soon as they said her name?” Nolan shifted in his seat as well, resting his forearms on his knees.

“Zelda…wow, that’s the crazy thing. Until I met Fox Varik, I thought she was a myth. I think most people thought she was a myth,” Sky mumbled, appearing to talk to himself for a moment. He beamed at Nolan. “Zelda is an old and powerful witch. Some people say that she’s hundreds of years old. Older than a lot of vampires.”

“Witches live that long?” Nolan gasped.

Sky scrunched up his face as he held up one hand and wobbled it. “Eh…depends on the witch. Necromancers don’t. We live a very average human life span. Grammy was eighty-two when she passed away. Earth witches can live longer. Most get past one hundred, assuming they don’t pick fights with a lot of other witches.”

“Blood witches?”

Sky shrugged. “No clue. Moon is the only one I’ve ever known. His mother was one, but she died in a car accident with his father, so we’ll never know.”

“So, Zelda is an earth witch.”

“Zelda is Zelda.” Sky threw up his hands and laughed. “She’s supposedly so powerful, she can do whatever fucking magic she wants. She’s the only witch I’ve ever heard of who can accurately see into the future. If she gives you a prophecy, you need to believe it. She does a lot of earth magic, but she can do other types. She’s friends with the Variks, and she tutors Fox Varik, but I’ve never seen her.”

Nolan picked up the stone resting on his chest and tipped his head down. He’d loosened the leather strap enough so he could see it without making his eyes cross. It was very pretty and smooth, made of several shades of blue. The symbols on the back were white in swirling patterns, with a Z woven into the middle of it all.

But it didn’t feel magical. Not like the same heavy tingle he got when he was near Sky when he cast a spell. Unless it was, but he’d gotten used to the feeling already.

“What you’re saying is that I need to keep this close because she gave me a powerful gift?” Nolan flashed Sky a cheeky grin.

“Luck magic is very hard and very rare. If that is infused with luck magic, then yes, it’s powerful, and you should always keep it close. But even if it’s not, word has gotten around that Zelda has given you a gift. That’s a layer of protection in itself. No one wants to fuck with her.” Sky clasped Nolan’s hand in both of his and pressed a kiss to his knuckles. “Zelda is very selective about who she helps. Think of it as gaining a blessing from your very own fairy godmother.”

“Well, I think she gave it to me so I can help you stay out of trouble.”

Sky’s eyebrows jumped up to his hairline. “Oh, really now?”

“Mn. She seems to think that you’re a giant magnet for trouble, and you need a human in your life to keep you safe and out of mischief.”

Brushing his lips against Nolan’s hand, Sky hummed. “Love me, Nolan. Find a way to love me, and I swear that I will stay out of trouble just so I can keep you near me.”

“I don’t think it’s a matter of finding a way. It’s too late. There’s a good chance I was already falling when you showed up on my doorstep with a basket of muffins, shouting at the neighbors.”

A high-pitched squeal was Nolan’s only warning. Sky launched himself at Nolan, tackling him so hard that Nolan’s lawn chair fell over. They ended up sprawled out on the grass next to the dying fire. The sky was turning gray as dawn crept closer, but stars still twinkled as if laughing.

But none of it compared to Sky’s look of pure joy. “I knew my muffins were magical!”

“No, baby. You’re magical, and you’re mine.” Nolan stole a kiss, his arms tightening around Sky as they lay in the cool grass.

So maybe his very normal, boring life now included sandwich-loving minions, demons, witches, vampires, and shifters. None of that mattered as long as he got to keep the strange, sassy necromancer with the gold vest for the rest of his days.
