Propping his shoulder on the wall, he closed his eyes and soaked in Sky’s voice. He balanced compassionate and no-nonsense so perfectly. That was his magic.

Nolan’s eyes popped open, and he barely stifled a groan at his own thoughts.

What was this?

Skipping heart. Sweaty palms. Moony thoughts.

Was he…was he smitten with Sky?

No. No. No.

This was the behavior his lovestruck characters fell into. Typically, right before he destroyed their world with an epic truth bomb or a kidnapping. Maybe even one character getting shot before the other was able to tell them how deeply they’d fallen in love. Twisting the knife just right for the reader so they were left hanging for a few more chapters, frantically flipping the pages until they got their serotonin shot of HEA.

He and Sky hadn’t even been on a date yet.

So far, it had been Sky saving his ass. Saving Owen’s ass. And then saving his ass again.

Well, if he’d learned anything so far, it was that Sky was great in a crisis. The necromancer was calm, collected, and so confident. God, that is fucking sexy.

It wasn’t cocky, inflated confidence either. No, it was confidence backed up with skill.

There. This was it. This was the sign that he’d officially reached “old.”

When he was young, he thought bad-boy arrogance was sexy.

Now, competence and compassion were the sexiest fucking things in the entire world.

And why not? Sky had a house, a job, he ran his own side business, had friends, and was comfortable in his own skin. So what if he was a necromancer who had creepy, pickle-eating plants in his front yard and could summon underworld minions with a sandwich? Sky was a catch and Nolan needed to get his act together, or he was going to screw up his shot with this amazing person.

He could hear Jennifer cackling at him.

So fucking smitten.

Nolan descended the last step and crossed the hall to the living room. He peeked inside but didn’t see Sky and his new client. They were probably in the kitchen, sitting at the table with some tea or coffee, as Sky figured out what he could and couldn’t do for this client. He hesitated. Should he disturb Sky?

Glancing over his shoulder, he took in the murky sky and dreary light that was trying to pierce the thick walls of gray clouds that had moved over the city. Spring was about to deliver another heavy downpour and there were a few things he needed from his place so he could continue his work.

Sky had said not to leave his house without him until the Variks got this matter settled with Christoph, but it was the middle of the day. While there was a lot of shit Hollywood didn’t get right about vampires, Sky and Winter had confirmed that vampires couldn’t go out in the sun. He was safe from Christoph for a few more hours.

Besides, he was just running over to his house for a few minutes. A quick in and out. No big deal. He’d return before Sky finished his consultation. He didn’t want to disturb Sky’s daily life more than he already had.

But, to be on the safe side, he pulled his phone from his pocket and sent Sky a text.

Running to the house to grab a couple of things for work. BRB.

That way, Sky knew exactly where he was and didn’t have to stop his meeting.

Nolan slipped out the front door and closed it as quietly as possible behind him. He glanced once more at the clouds churning black and heavy over his head. In and out of his place, and he’d be in Sky’s warm and cozy home ahead of the rain.

But as he descended the stairs, his steps slowed as his gaze locked on the rosebushes that lined the front porch and along the driveway. Everything about them appeared absolutely normal. Green leaves, pretty pink petals, and sunny yellow centers that brought cheeriness to a dreary day. None of the weird movement or hungry lip smacking he’d encountered last night. Maybe it was a nighttime thing? Or maybe Sky had to use a spell to wake them up?

Or maybe it was the smell of the pickles?

Regardless, Nolan didn’t linger. He picked up the pace, his steps brisk and almost silent as he hurried past the bushes and down the driveway. The street was empty of strange cars and no one was strolling along the sidewalk. It was as if the entire neighborhood was indulging in an afternoon nap ahead of the spring storm.

That sounded like an excellent idea. Stretched out in bed, the distant roll of thunder through the clouds, and a cuddly Sky in his arms.

Unfortunately, he was running behind on his current book, his editor was asking him questions about the book she was cleaning up for him, and there was other admin work demanding his attention. In short, there was no time for napping.
