“You need to be careful. There is also a panic button under your desk. If you hit the wrong one, you’ll have twenty security officers racing in on you in the middle of…” Her grimace finalizes her reply. “It’s happened before.”

“To one of Jack’s previous girlfriends?” I stumble over my last word. Can I call myself Jack’s girlfriend without first discussing that with him? And do I want to know about his past loves with how radio silent he’s been today? I haven’t seen him since we left the elevator. It isn’t necessarily that he’s avoiding me, but my bruised ego is certainly taking it like that.

Ignoring my heart’s brutal twist, I brush off Elaine’s shocked expression as a consequence of her not wanting to break the non-disclosure agreement she signed before working with Jack before entering the bathroom.

It is even more spectacular up close. A double shower with multiple heads takes up a majority of the back wall. The vanity stretches from one wall to the next, and there is both a toilet and a bidet.

Confident the mirrored wall next to the toilet is mirrored like the one in the elevator, I slip into the bathroom—closing the door behind me—do my business, flush, then head to the vanity to wash my hands.

Even the hand soap is designer, and it smells divine when I scrub it into my skin. As I dry my hands on the washable hand towels, my eyes flick to the vanity next to mine. The products on that side of the sink are far more mannish. It still has the soap dispenser and moisturizer combination, but instead of a floral perfume being offered as a refresher, it has aftershave.

Curious, I pace toward the sliver of light announcing there are two hidden doors to this bathroom. Since I know whose office is next to mine, my steps are almost too fast for my body to keep up with. I more stumble toward the door than walk, but mercifully, the man I’m racing for is too invested in a heated conversation to notice my approach.

“I can’t uninvite her, Elaine. How would that look?” Jack pauses for a second before he starts again. “That’s why I need you to decline my invitation.” He grips his phone so hard I wouldn’t be shocked to discover he’s cracked the screen. “I know it’s for fucking charity.”

I duck back with barely a second to spare.

Jack swivels his chair so fast, you’d swear he has eyes in the back of his head.

When he stands from his chair, I abort my mission. Tension is already radiating off him in invisible waves, so I don’t want to siphon his mood even more by being busted spying on him.

I race for the other end of the bathroom so fast I burst into my office like the boogeyman is chasing me.

Even Elaine startles.

“Are you okay?”

I wonder how many Elaines Jack knows when she peers up at me with concerned eyes. Her cell phone isn’t attached to her ear. It isn’t even on the desk.

“Yeah… ah…” I pivot to point to the bathroom door. “I couldn’t work out how to get it open. I thought I was going to be trapped in the bathroom for the rest of the day.”

Elaine is either slow or she wants this conversation over as quickly as me. “There are sensors near the door. You just need to move close enough for them to detect you, then they open.”

I almost breathe out, “Yep! I just learned that the hard way,” but I keep my mouth shut before once again getting back to work.

My head pops up when Jess bounds into my office. She has changed out of her work clothes and become the envy of every female in the vicinity in a body-hugging pair of yoga pants and an X-back crop top.

“Ready?” When I grimace, she enters my office with a groan. “How can you forget Whack ‘Em Wednesday? We do it every week.”

“With Jack…” With him being the sole cause of my confusion and forgetfulness of late, I cut off my excuse before veering for an easier one. “Can I get changed once we get there? I have spare clothes in my locker.”

“You can do whatever you like as long as you get your booty moving.” She moves around my desk then plucks me from my chair. “We’re competing against Linc and Tristan today. If we beat them, we’re in the finals.”

“Then maybe you should pay more attention to the ball instead of Linc’s racket.”

Jess scoffs off my idea as if it is ludicrous before she guides me past Jack’s office and loads me into a waiting elevator. It is ludicrous of me to glance toward Jack’s office to make sure he knows I’m leaving when I spin to face the front of the elevator, but for some reason, I do.
