“In all of my experience, and I’m saying with what is in the gossip pages, Brice doesn’t make that effort when it comes to a woman. Even Howard said it’s not normal for him to be chasing after a woman. He’s spoiled and used to everyone else chasing him.”

“This isn’t making me feel better.”

Haley laughed. “I’m not trying to make you feel any better. What I’m trying to tell you is that Brice clearly feels something for you. Even if it’s just the good sex, otherwise he wouldn’t be there with you.”

“I don’t know what to do.”

“Simple, enjoy it.”

“How can I do that?”

“Did you have fun last night?” Haley asked.

“Yes.”

“Then keep doing that. Stop fighting what you enjoy and start embracing it. You and Brice are clearly attracted to each other. Why not see what it’s all about?” Haley lifted her cup to her lips.

Sitting back in her chair, Danielle stared at her friend. “Not make a big deal out of it?”

“Not right now. You don’t need to. It may last or it may not. You’ll never know until you try. What are you so afraid of?”

“I’m not afraid. I just don’t want to be … hurt. I like him, and he’s been a good friend so far.” What she liked as well was that Brice knew what their parents were like. They had similar problems in their family life.

“It doesn’t have to change. You’re the one in charge of your own destiny, Dani. No one else.”

“You’re right. I’m the one in charge. I need to stop worrying.” She finished her coffee. “I’m going to take him back a coffee. He doesn’t know I left.” This time, her cheeks went bright red. “I’m a horrible person.”

“I’m sure he’s done it to women before. This has been so much fun. I’m the one calling you most times. I hope I helped.”

“You did. I don’t suppose you’ll give me a lift, will you?”

“I can’t believe you still don’t have a license.”

“I don’t need one. I’ve got awesome friends who adore me.” She blew a kiss at Haley.

Ordering two more cups of coffee and a breakfast sandwich, she followed Haley out to her car.

When they got to her place, she told Haley to drop her off. Climbing out, she typed in the code, letting her into her home.

Brice’s car was still in the driveway. She wondered if he was even awake yet.

“Come on, Danielle, don’t be a wimp.”

Entering her home, she turned, and there was Brice. He wasn’t wearing a shirt, but he sat on the stairs. His hands were clasped together in front of him as he leaned forward on his knees.

She closed the door, and he looked up.

“Tell me you haven’t been waiting long?”

“I checked the whole house and realized you’d sneaked out on me.”

She winced.

“Was last night so bad? It didn’t feel bad to me.”

“It wasn’t bad. Honestly, it wasn’t.”

“Then what was it for you to sneak out?”

She glanced down at the coffee. “I have sweet treats.”

“I asked if you were with me last night, Danielle. You said you were.”

“I was. I mean, I am. I’m totally there.”

“What happened from last night to this morning?” he asked.

“I slept, and I woke up this morning in your arms and panicked.”

“Why?”

“If I tell you that part of being casual was never having any sleepovers, what would you say?” She didn’t like being this open or this honest.

“You’ve never slept with a guy?”

“I’ve slept with a guy. I’ve just never, you know, spent the entire night asleep, next to a guy. I’ve never woken up with a man’s arms wrapped around me.” And she’d never wanted to. Only, this morning, she had woken in his arms, and she liked it. So much. The feelings it had inspired scared her.

She’d panicked and run. Well, not run, more like slowly, really slowly, walked away.

“I bought you a coffee,” she said. “And breakfast, and we have a tiny problem.”

“What problem?”

“We had sex three times last night, and I told you I wasn’t on the pill. You came inside me. No condom. And yeah, we have a problem.”

She saw he went pale.

“Did you even hear me when I said I wasn’t on the pill?” she asked.

“No.” He ran a hand down his face. “So, you could be pregnant right now?”

“No. Of course not. I mean, there’s no way. Right?”

“It only takes one time.”

“I should have gone and gotten the morning-after pill.”

“No!” He stood up, and she backed away. The force of his shout startled her.

“Okay, fine. You do realize that the risk is there. It’s high the chance of me having a baby. I mean, it takes one sperm and one egg. I don’t have a clue where I am in my cycle. You release thousands of sperm. So really, we’re screwed.”

She turned on her heel and walked into the kitchen.
