“Bialar?”

I glance up at Jeikin. “Yes?”

“I can get you two in a room now.”

I’m relieved. I suspect Jeikin is bumping us ahead of someone because everyone can tell Kendra is uncomfortable. I feel bad, but I’m sure both other men understand. They’ve been in this situation themselves at one point.

I stand and push Kendra through the door that leads to the exam rooms and down the hallway where Jeikin leads us. “Go ahead and lift her onto the table. Chadka will be in shortly.”

As soon as he’s gone, I squat in front of Kendra and tug her blankie away.

She whimpers and tries to snatch it, but I’m too quick for her. I set it on the chair behind me and lift her out of the stroller.

“No, Papi,” she cries out, squirming in my arms as I lift her to the table. She may be feeling defiant, but I’m beyond pleased to hear her voice even if she’s angry. “I don’t need a doctor.”

I settle her on the end of the table and frame her body with my hands at her sides. I have to bend pretty far to meet her gaze, but when I do, I’m firm and resolute with my next words. “Would you like to sit nice and be a good girl? Or would you like me to spank your bottom while we’re waiting for Chadka?”

She frowns and drops her shoulders and her face.

I lift her face back up with one finger under her chin. “Which is it going to be?” I want to hear more words.

“I’ll be good,” she mumbles. “Can I have my blanket?”

“No. You don’t need it right now. The doctor can’t examine you if you’re hiding under a blanket.”

She crosses her arms.

I haven’t enforced a single rule yet. I haven’t needed to because she hasn’t gotten adventurous enough for me to list the household rules about running, touching the stove, or opening doors.

She also hasn’t intentionally touched her breasts much. She’s not as self-conscious about her breasts when it’s just the two of us alone. I don’t need Chadka to tell me I need to nip this in the bud right now. “Arms at your sides, Little one. I know it’s been over six months since I told you to keep your hands away from your titties, but it was two weeks ago for you. I’m certain you have not forgotten that rule.”

She gasps and glances up at me. “I don’t like to be naked. If you’d give me some clothes, I wouldn’t feel the need to cover myself.”

“I’m going to count to three. One…”

She immediately drops her arms, but her sigh is exaggerated and defiant.

The door opens, and I glance over my shoulder to find Chadka entering. This should be interesting. This visit is going to change things between us. For better or for worse remains to be seen.

My nerves are on edge.

Chapter Nine

Bialar

“Good morning. It’s so good to see you.” Chadka reaches out a hand to shake mine.

I turn slightly, keeping a hand on Kendra while I shake Chadka’s with my other. When I release him, I step to one side of the table.

He shifts his attention to my Little girl next. “You must be Kendra.”

She pouts.

He lifts his stethoscope and comes closer. “It’s nice to finally meet you. I bet you’d rather be outside playing than in this office, huh?” He rubs the flat surface of the stethoscope, presumably warming it.

Kendra shakes her head. “I’d rather be wearing clothes. I’d rather have makeup on and have my hair fixed.”

“Well, we don’t have any clothes on Eleadia, nor do we have makeup, but I bet your Papi can do pigtails or braids.” Chadka rubs the back of her head. “Can you sit up tall for me so I can listen to your heart?”

Kendra’s bottom lip is thrust out, but she manages to sit up about an inch taller. She’s still slouching.

Chadka sets the disk on her chest and listens. He moves it around several times before he’s done. “Heart and lungs sound great. How have you been feeling?” He comes around to the end of the table to face her.

Kendra shrugs.

Chadka lifts her chin and looks her in the eye. “I know it’s hard adjusting to so much change, and I don’t want to make it more difficult, but if you can’t cooperate and answer my questions, I’ll have to do a far more thorough exam than necessary.” He lifts a challenging brow.

Kendra blows out an exasperated breath. “I’m fine.”

“No headaches or tummy aches?”

“No.”

“Kendra…” I say with a strong warning in my tone.

She scowls at me and grits out, “No, Sir.”

“As you can see, we’re having issues. This is an improvement though. Until five minutes ago, she hadn’t spoken a word.”

“I see.”

“I’m hoping for advice,” I tell him.

“That I have in abundance,” he promises me. He pulls up a rolling chair and sits, putting himself below eye level. I’m sure it’s a way of appearing less intimidating.
