It had come to Seamus’s attention weeks ago that Darrius, instead of just dealing guns to local street thugs, wanted to get into the international arms race, which Seamus was still loosely connected to. For the past several years, however, Seamus had made painstaking efforts to separate his legitimate business venture from the illegal ones by greasing the right palms, and laundering his money in ways that it could never be traced. He had slowly built a reputation as a respectable financier and he’d be damned if he allowed this two-bit hustler to destroy it.

Instead of responding right away, Darrius made a big show out of cutting and then lighting his cigar. He took two exaggerated puffs before meeting Seamus’s gaze. Seamus allowed the other man the luxury because it would be his last. “I’m sure I don’t know what you’re talking about, Haggerty.”

Seamus raised a brow. “Oh, but I think you do. But I’m not here to argue with you. I had originally thought to send one of my former associates down here and take care of this, but I wanted to look you in the eye first before…” He broke off as a smile titled his lips. It was clear Darrius didn’t think he had anything to fear.

Darrius narrowed his beady dark eyes. “Do what?”

Seamus cracked his knuckles before answering. “I’m sure you’re not as dumb as you look.”

Darrius slammed the flats of his palms on his desk. “Fuck you! Who the hell do you think you are? I don’t fucking take orders from you anymore so you either show me some damn respect or I’ll stomp another hole in your white ass. You think you’re better than me because you wear a fancy suit and some people choose to ignore who you really are. Just because your office is in a damn skyscraper downtown doesn’t mean you’re better than me. As a matter of fact, I should bust a cap in your bitch ass for thinking you still run shit.”

Seamus raised a brow. “Oh? This should be interesting. Will one of your men do it or are you man enough to back up your talk with action?”

Darrius jumped out of his seat and pulled out a gun that he must have been hiding under his desk. “Now say something else, motherfucker!” His eyes were wide and spittle flew from his mouth.

A smirk tilted Seamus’s lips. “I’ve always been told never to point a gun at someone unless you intend to use it.”

Darrius cocked the gun, but Seamus remained unimpressed. He held out his arms.

“Do it.”

“Think I won’t?”

“If you wanted to shoot me, you would have done it by now.” Seamus reached behind his waistband and pulled out a pistol and wasted no time in shooting off two rounds, one in each of Darrius’s shoulders. The weapon flew out of Darrius’s hands.

“Son of a bitch!” Seamus’s target collapsed to the ground. “What the fuck am I paying you assholes for? Get him!” He yelled at his cronies.

The two men in black didn’t move a muscle.

Seamus had faced much more dangerous adversaries in his thirty-two years, but he was no fool. Even small time thugs like Darrius could be deadly given the right circumstances. So before he’d come here, he made sure to thoroughly research the men Darrius paid to ‘protect ‘ him and had his own people approach them with offers neither could refuse. Sure they technically still worked for this scumbag, but they knew not to lift a finger when he stepped into the office. It helped that Seamus knew that even though Darrius wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, he wasn’t stupid enough to actually shoot him without realizing there would be consequences.

Seamus walked around the desk to the man writhing on the floor, bleeding out from his wounds. “Consider this a warning. I’m a good enough shot to know I didn’t hit any major arteries, but just know that if you continue to use my name, the next shot will be in the nuts. I’d probably be doing a favor to all those little girls you seem to prefer.”

A tinge of disgust rose in his chest. “On second thought…” Seamus kicked the whimpering man between the legs with all the force he could muster.

Darrius screamed in agony before throwing up and then passing out in his own vomit.

Seamus turned to the cowering girl in the corner who remained in the same spot she’d been in when he arrived. As if sensing she was being watched, she raised her head.

He froze.

He wasn’t sure if she recognized him, but he certainly remembered her. How could he forget? Even covered in the ick, she was one of the most hauntingly beautiful creatures he’d ever seen.

She was also a thief.

Seamus wasn’t usually at a loss for word but it too him several moments to find his voice. When he finally did, he turned to the bodyguards. “Whenever your boss comes to, tell him I’m taking her for the inconvenience,” he said, jerking his thumb toward the woman who now stared at him with wide-eyed horror. “Let him know this is the last I expect to hear from him or our next encounter won’t be as pleasant.”
