I stay silent, waiting for him to go on. My curiosity flares, thinking about Ramsey the wolf, Ramsey the man, and how it all fits together.

“Ramsey has that training,” Liam says. “He’s better than me at many techniques. He’s capable. He’s calm. I’ve never, not since we were kids anyway, seen him change like that.”

I stare into the darkness, then flinch when I hear it. Ramsey’s howl is coming from what seems like impossibly far away, through the forest, more a faint echo than anything.

“He sounds like he’s run miles.”

“He probably has. We have speed and stamina, especially when we’re flooded with the wolf like that. I’ll go and tell your mother we’ll be leaving soon.”

“Are you sure he’ll come back?” I whisper, my mind flitting to the kiss, my lips burning with his taste, my body tingling. “What if he’s already lost?”

“He’s not,” Liam says.

“How do you know?”

“I can scent him. He’s not lost. He’s too full of adrenaline, of....”

“Of what?”

Liam shakes his head. “It’s not my place. Let’s just say he’s sending signals that tell me he’s thinking about you.”

I nod, smoothing my hands over my belly, already certain I can feel the tingling there too.

“Liam.” I swallow, knowing I’m giving away my desires, but Liam seems like the sort not to get involved, just to give answers, at least in personal matters. “Is it possible for a human and a wolf to have babies?”

“Yes, it is,” Liam says. “Humans and our kind have often mated. But like I said, you and Ramsey, what you’re sharing...it’s rare. I’m not sure what it is. Maybe we’ll never know. But his scent can’t lie.”

I nod, hugging myself even tighter, remembering what we shared, what I said.

It was like the lust made me super confident.

But now, in the aftermath, the comment seems so ridiculous, telling him I want him to take my virginity.

Like there isn’t a chance I freak the second he undoes my pants button.

And that’s if he doesn’t go full wolf first.

And that’s if the hunters don’t find us.

“Let’s go,” Liam says. “He’s on his way back. He’s changing.”

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Ramsey

I follow the car on my motorbike, speeding after them. Ruby’s scent is easy to follow even if the car takes a turn out of view. It’s easier this way, traveling separately, after what happened in the house.

I sprinted through the countryside, bounding until the haze finally left, and I was able to think clearly.

My bones ache now, my body sore from the suddenness of the change. It’s the sort of rookie error I never would’ve made before I met Ruby.

But I wouldn’t change it, this fusion, this closeness.

She wants to give me her virginity. She was so ready, soaked, burning up. The breaths of her orgasm move through my mind, phantoms tempting me.

I saw her briefly when I returned after I’d changed into fresh clothes. She was standing at the car, looking over at the house. Her arms crossed over her middle like she was already protecting our child.

I’m the only one who’s ever going to touch you. You belong to me completely. Only me. Forever.

Liam is leading us down country roads toward another safe house. I haven’t ridden this motorbike in years, but now I’m glad I stowed it there. It came in handy.

If I was sitting in the car with them, a look from Ruby...I’d change, my body bulging against the car, shattering the glass.

I remember when I was the wolf, nudging her into the corner.

Would I truly hurt her if I knew to protect her then?

But she wasn’t even naked, and that’s how crazy I went. I’m not sure what would happen if she was lying in bed, her body exposed, those juicy breasts and her wide hips and her wet pussy, pink and raw and ready to be claimed.

Never as the wolf, that would be wrong.

But the excitement might make me change at the wrong time, suddenly erupt, and then…

No, no.

Finally, Liam turns off into the countryside, taking us into deep woodland. He stops at the side of the road, parking the car off to the side. Liam hops out, pulling large branches over the car to give it some measure of camouflage.

“We’ll have to walk from here,” he says when I pull up.

Ilsa and Ruby stand off to the side next to their suitcases, looking like they’re waiting to be picked up for a holiday, not like they’re running for their lives. It’s dark, their features hazy.

I know it’s wrong, especially after what happened, but I adjust my eyes, let a sliver of the wolf out, to see her better.

Mistake.

Other parts of me flare, threatening to follow the change, and I retreat from all of it. I breathe slowly, closing my eyes, warning myself not to do that again.

Walking over, I distance myself even further, purposefully only looking at her face and into her welcoming eyes and the nervous smile playing on her lips. All is revealed the closer I get.
