Rage burns in his eyes as he reaches back, grips Marcus by the arm, and pulls him forward just enough to clock the fucker right in the jaw. Marcus laughs louder as I fly back against the chair, determined to get out of the way if this somehow turns into an all-out brawl in the back of the car, but apparently, one punch is all Roman needs as he rights himself in the driver’s seat. “You’re asking for trouble.”
Marcus rubs a hand over his jaw as Levi watches the show like it’s prime time television. Hell, all he needs is a bowl of triple butter popcorn and he’ll be right for the night. “Nah man,” Marcus says. “We’re asking for the freedom we’ve been deprived of for the last ten years. Make it happen, brother. Join the rebellion.”
I shrug my shoulders, failing to hide my mischievous grin. “We could take a vote,” I tease, knowing exactly how that would go. Roman glares at me through the mirror and I let out a sigh before scooching forward to the edge of my seat and leaning over the side of his. He watches me cautiously as the last time I did this, I shoved my arm around his throat and epically failed at choking him.
My arms drop over each of his shoulders, one hand dangling down his big frame as the other rests against his chest, feeling the rapid beat of his heart beneath. “Come on, big guy,” I purr as my hand slowly roams over his wide chest. “When are you going to take back what’s rightfully yours? Come out with us. We can even go to your favorite dive bar, or we can go find one of those assholes that you need to settle a score with; whatever helps you relax and have a good time. I won’t even try to run from you guys. I just want to go out and have a good time. Then come tomorrow, everything can go back to how it was. I won’t even whine when you come at me with your usual Roman bullshit.”
His hand falls to mine over his chest and he holds it still as his thumb moves back and forth across my skin, but considering the way he still glares at me through the mirror, I doubt he even knows that he’s doing it.
Silence fills the Escalade and the tension rises, everyone impatiently waiting for Roman’s final decision. Though it’s not like we wouldn’t just go without him like Marcus suggested, but having him there would make it feel right.
Roman sighs and his hard gaze finally falls away from mine before focusing out the windshield at the empty city street. “Fine,” he finally says, giving in. “But we’re doing this my way.”
His foot slams down on the gas and the momentum has me flying back in my seat, only Roman grips onto my hand, not letting me go for even a second. He speeds through the city and after only a few turns, Marcus and Levi seem to relax as though they know exactly where Roman is leading us.
The Escalade comes to a stop at a liquor store and as Levi goes to get out, I start listing off all the different kinds of things I need to get tonight going. Only after the fourth item, Levi looks back at me with a blank expression. “You don’t expect me to remember all that, do you?”
I let out a sigh and pull my hand free from Roman’s tight grip. I shove myself out through the door and tumble out onto the asphalt. “What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” Levi hisses, looking around and double-checking that no one is about to come running out at us.
I look up at him, the confusion clear across my face. “What?” I demand. “Stop looking at me like that.”
He shakes his head and grips my arms, pulling me in close beside him so that I don’t somehow get away despite telling Roman that I wouldn’t. “Someone might see you,” he hisses, keeping his voice low. “You may have forgotten that you’re supposed to be a kidnapped prisoner, but the rest of the world hasn’t.”
“Correction,” I grin up at him, striding toward the liquor store. “The rest of the world thinks I was mauled to death by a bear. Besides, I was a nobody in that old life. Trust me, everyone has already forgotten who the hell I was.”
Levi pulls me in closer and slips his hand into the back pocket of my jeans, getting a good handful of ass in the process. “Impossible, Shayne. No one could ever forget you.”
Ten minutes later, I come striding out of the liquor store with a cheesy as fuck grin on my face as Levi walks beside me, a massive box of selections in his arms. Apparently, just choosing one is a lot harder than it sounds. Hell, Marcus and Levi are proof of that. I don’t ever want to choose between them, but if they want to take me on at the same time, I won’t have any issues with that either.
