The phone rang and rang. No answer. I left the toilet and even as I headed back to the bar, I hit call again, but Rex still didn’t pick up. Should I wait for him outside? My legs were still wobbly, and I was lucky to make it back to the table without toppling over a chair or table.

“We were about to come and look for you,” Melissa said when I sat back down.

“I was on the phone,” I said weakly.

“Another round?” Jenny asked and the others said yes.

I asked for water. Before the drinks could even arrive, Rex was striding into the bar. He came up to our table, a charming smile on his face.

“May I borrow this young lady for a bit?” he asked, while helping me out of my chair.

All the girls were open-mouthed with wonder.

“Of course,” Melissa said.

Rex held me up as we walked out of the bar. Not a word was spoken between us.

I let my head fall back on the head rest and closed my eyes. The dizziness was returning so staying still was no hardship. Rex only spoke once more to tell me he could stop anytime if I was feeling sick.

His cologne wafted to my side, making me want to curl up on his lap. I must have fallen asleep because the next thing I heard was Rex’s voice.

“You’re home, beautiful. I’ll help you up to your apartment,” he said, his tone brisk. He opened his door and closed it shut.

Ouch, even that noise hurt my head. What the hell was in those cocktails? I wondered if he was so irritated that he had had to come and fetch me. But that didn’t make sense. He was the one who had offered. Insisted even. Or maybe he was disgusted at how I looked when I’d had one too many. I was sure that there were mascara streaks running down my face.

Misery came over me. I should not have answered his call. A drunk woman was not a pretty sight, especially me. I was known to say ridiculous things when under the influence. I decided I wasn’t going to embarrass myself further by opening my mouth.

I bit my lower lip to ensure that no words left my lips.

Rex opened my door and helped me unbuckle my seatbelt. It felt nice to have my hand firmly in his, even though he was only doing it to keep me upright.

Rex opened the door and held it for me to enter, then followed me in.

“Can I get you a drink or coffee?” I asked him as I kicked off my shoes.

“No, I’m good. I have to go anyway. It’s Hannah’s day off and I called Mrs. Wells to keep an eye on Kayden,” he said, his tone all business-like.

“Oh,” I said. So, he couldn’t wait to leave. “Thanks for bringing me home.”

“You’re welcome,” he said, inching towards the door. He held the knob, then turned back to me. “What are you doing tomorrow afternoon?”

“I’ll be home with Pogo.”

Rex’s glance bounced around the apartment. “Where is he?”

“He’ll show himself when you leave. He doesn’t do guests, remember?” I said with a laugh.

“Smart dog,” Rex said. His gaze settled back on me, sending an electric current sizzling through my body. “Do you want to go to dinner with me and my friends, Matt and Alice, tomorrow?”

“Sure,” I said, trying to sound cool.

“Okay.” He smiled. Did he know how handsome he was? I doubted it. “I’ll pick you up.”

“Dress code?” I asked before he closed the door behind him.

“Casual,” he threw over his shoulder and shut the door.

Pogo emerged from his hiding spot behind the curtain. I sank to the floor and sat cross legged. He came straight to my lap.

“Let’s go to bed,” I told Pogo, my good mood evaporating. I’d made an error of judgment when I agreed to go out for drinks with my workmates. I should have said no.

I stopped in front of him.

His gaze rippled down the lines of my body, lingering on my exposed cleavage. He traced a finger between my breasts and a shiver ran through me. My nerves woke up, demanding more.

“So, you took Kayden to see your parents, huh?”

“Yeah.”

“How did it go?”

“It was love at first sight. My mother said it was like having me all over again.”

“That’s good,” I whispered.

“You look ravishing,” he said throatily.

“Thank you,” I murmured.

Unable to resist him, I stepped forward and wrapped my arms around his neck.

Rex’s eyes darkened. I pressed my breasts against his chest. He cupped my face and brought his lips to mine. A rush of arousal spread over every inch of my body as our tongues tangled with each other. Rex’s hands cupped my breasts tightly, making me cry out in arousal.

Breathing heavily, I made myself pull back. “If we continue with this, we are not going to go anywhere.”
