“Okay, Daddy,” the boy agreed easily.

The three of them left and Rex led me into the foyer. Another man came into the elevator with us, so we didn’t speak. I just pressed myself against Rex’s hard body and reveled in the wonderful warmth that came from it.

The condo was breathtakingly beautiful with long walls of glass that looked over the park, but I couldn’t appreciate it. I needed answers. There was so much I wanted to know. What was really going on? Where had Kayden come from?

Rex rang a bell, and a woman appeared.

“This is Mrs. Wells, my housekeeper. Mrs. Wells, this is my girlfriend, Willow Garrett.”

“Nice to meet you, Miss Garrett. Can I get you something to drink?”

“Uh... no. I don’t think so. Thank you.”

“Bring us a bottle of red wine anyway,” Rex said, and Mrs. Wells departed.

Happy butterflies flitted in my stomach as I watched him. I suspected that he felt the same because he stopped in the middle of the room and just smiled.

I was glad that I’d followed Melissa’s advice, else I don’t know how long we’d have gone without Rex ever telling me what was going on in his life.

“You look so beautiful,” he said.

“Thank you.” I felt as though I was floating on air.

I made myself sit down next to Willow rather than toss her over my shoulder and carry her to my bed. Seeing her, inhaling her scent, made me more aware of how much I’d missed her in the two days. I’d been running out of excuses and I was glad that everything was out in the open.

“He’s an adorable little boy,” Willow said.

“I think so too,” I said.

Mrs. Wells came in with the bottle of wine, which she proceeded to pour into two glasses. As soon as she left, Willow reached for her wine and took a sip. Then she turned to me. “Let’s start from the beginning, huh?” There was a lot of hurt in her voice and I felt like crap because I’d put it there.

The only thing that would do was honesty. “Jessica contacted me when we were at Bison Ridge, or rather she contacted my people. She said that I was the father of her child, and she wanted to leave the boy with me.”

Willow’s eyes widened but she didn’t say anything, allowing me to continue with my explanation.

“Anyway, I got back and the first thing we did of course was the DNA test. It came out positive, but even without it, one look at Kayden and I knew that he was my son.”

“Why didn’t she tell you before that?”

I explained everything to her and Willow’s hand had flown to her mouth, covering it.

“That’s insane,” Willow said.

I’d kinda gotten so used to the circumstances surrounding Kayden coming into my life that I’d forgotten how truly shocking and unbelievable it would be to a lot of people.

“So yeah, that’s how I ended up with Kayden. I was furious with Jessica to start with, but without her, I’d not have Kayden. She has already signed over her parental rights to Kayden. All she wanted was visitation rights but that won’t be for long either. She’ll be moving into a hospice soon.”

“Wow! Poor thing. What an amazingly selfless sacrifice she made to give Kayden up to you now, so he would not see her suffer and die.”

Over the years, I’d listened to parents go on and on about the kind of love they had for their children, but I had never understood the all-consuming nature of having a child. You couldn’t if you were not into children in the first place or didn’t have kids. Now, I understood. I also understood why Jessica had given up Kayden too.

Willow shook her head and stared at something in the air. “Well, I think he’s a lucky little boy to have you in his life. From what I’ve seen so far, you’re a wonderful father.”

“Thank you. He’s really important to me and I want to give him a wonderful childhood to make up for his lack of a mother.”

She bit her lower lip. “You know when you asked if I wanted children, I thought it was just one of those questions people throw around casually. If I had known that you had Kayden, my answer would have been very different. I really didn’t mean to imply that children are a burden or anything like that.”

“I should have given you a chance and told you the truth about what was going on, but I think I’m still not totally sure it’s all real. Everything happened so fast. I haven’t even told my parents.”

I closed the distance between us, took her wine glass and set it on the coffee table. I slid my hand at the back of her neck. “I’ve missed you.”

The air between us became charged with sexual tension. Willow slid onto my lap and wrapped her arms around my neck. Her breath fanned my face but all I cared about was tasting her sweet lips.
