The waiter came over to take our orders and I ordered her a glass of wine to go with her meal while I stuck to bottled water. I don’t even take a sip when she’s riding with me, but I bet she doesn’t even realize that shit.

I buttered some bread and fed it to her before shoving whatever her birdlike eating ass didn’t take. “How was your day?” I could see a new kind of nerves in her small frame as she sat like a stone in her chair.

There was a lesson in this shit that I hope she was getting. She hates uncomfortable situations and confrontation of any kind, so I know she was in semi hell right now.

Next time she see that motherfucker coming I bet you she’d run hard in the other direction. I don’t use my fists, and hardly use words unless absolutely necessary. I’m more of a show and tell type. It’s one of the first things they taught me in school after all. The shit must be good for something.

“It was fine. I got a lot done.”

“How so?”

“I closed on that big house over on Frye and got another big listing all in one day.”

Her eyes lit up like stars as she told me about her huge commission and how excited she was to get the new listing and all the plans she had for putting the place on the website.

I listened to every word attentively and knew that was the reason for the light in her eyes. I hid my smile as she prattled on and on, all but forgetting her unease. Her time in the hot seat was over, now it’s the asshole’s turn to sweat.

Our appetizers came and I kept her hand in mine as we ate. Her hand trembled and I didn’t have to look behind me to know the mouse had crawled out of his hole.

“Tyler?”

“What is it?”

“Please don’t do anything. I won’t talk to him again.”

“Are you pleading for him?”

“No-no, I just don’t want you to get into trouble.” That could be true. I already have a fucked up reputation in this town.

“Don’t ever stand in front of anyone against me baby. I might take that shit the wrong way.”

“That’s not what I meant. You…” She bit off her words and looked down at her plate.

“You have something on your mind say it.” Her little face was pinched tight as a puckered asshole. I know she has a temper, something else she tries to hide. That’s her thing, she hides shit.

“I just don’t know why you’re making such a big deal about this. I went to the bar to see Adriana and he just happened to be there. We barely said five words to each other and it took less than two minutes.”

“There’s a whole lot wrong with what you just said, but we’ll save that for later.” She tried pulling her hand out of mine but I tightened my hold.

“You wanna play?” It wasn’t my words but my tone that had her settling her little ass down.

The waiter came over to clear our plates and I saw the asshole in the reflection of the wall of glass siding, just standing by the hostess stand watching us. I’m surprised he hadn’t made a run for it already.

I debated going after him now or later after our meal and decided I liked the idea of making his life just that much more miserable; let him wait. Wait and wonder about what I was going to do to his ass for being stupid.

We ate the rest of our meal in silence with her jumping every time someone walked by our table. She had every reason to be nervous, she knows very well what I’m capable of.

Poor thing, nothing in her life had prepared her for the likes of me. Her sweet, well planned out life had been turned upside down the day she met me. I’m the monster her parents warned her about when she was little.

Then again I wasn’t ready for her either. When I was running the streets of Chicago trying to keep my ass alive I never in my wildest dreams thought I’d be here, sitting across the table from a little society princess.

In fact I thought I’d be dead by twenty-five or sooner. But here I am, thirty and my life was

looking better and better everyday. She doesn’t know it, but she’s the jewel in my crown. That one thing I will fight to the death to hold on to.

Chapter 3

The fucked up thing is that we were never meant to be, little Miss. Perfect and I. She’s the sister of the woman I was supposed to marry. Sounds like a fucking trailer park sitcom.

It’s a long complicated story, but to make that shit short, the night before the big wedding it was revealed in the most unpleasant way that her boyfriend was fucking my fiancée and had been for a while.
