“Holy shit,” Becs laughs. “I can only imagine how he took that.”

“He wasn’t exactly thrilled about it,” I offer. “But getting ready for my hot date while he was in my apartment trying to convince me that we should just pretend all the bullshit from the weekend never happened was actually pretty entertaining.”

“I see,” she says as our drinks are delivered to our table. “You clearly put in all the work. You look like a snack! I bet he was salivating the whole time.”

I can’t help but laugh as I scoop up my glass. “Not going to lie, I definitely played it to my advantage.”

“So what’s going to happen now?”

I shrug my shoulders as I sip on my drink. “Honestly, I have no idea. I told him if he isn’t able to break the rules and admit what’s happening here, then I’m not interested in being his punching bag. I told him to let me go.”

“Do you think he will?”

“That’s the part I’m not sure about.”

“I think you’re doing the right thing pulling away from him,” she tells me. “I know you were hoping for a different outcome, and I was really rooting for you. I want you to have everything you’ve ever wanted, but not at the cost of your heart. If doing this with him is going to keep hurting you, then I think you need to take a step back and reevaluate what the right thing for you is going to be.”

I nod. “I know you’re right, but I really don’t want to admit it.”

“I know you don’t. It’s hard to let go of something you’ve wanted for so long.”

I feel my eyes start to sting with the threat of tears, and I blink them away, taking a long sip of my cocktail to try and mask the emotions welling up in my chest. I always knew there would come a time when I would have to force myself to let go of Izaac, I just never expected it would hurt this bad. Hell, after the past few weeks, I started to wonder if I’d have to let go of him at all. I thought something was starting here. I thought I finally had my chance.

“Okay,” I tell her. “I need you to talk about something else, otherwise I’m going to start sobbing, and once I start, I don’t think I’m going to be able to stop.”

“Alright. Well . . . ummm,” she pauses, a cringe stretching across her face as she lifts her glass to her lips and takes a hefty drink. “I kinda did something stupid, and I don’t want you to hate me, but like . . . ahhh shit.”

“Oh my god,” I groan in disgust. “You slept with my brother.”

“Guilty,” she says. “But in my defense, it didn’t happen on the dancefloor at Cherry. You kinda disappeared after you and Izaac had office door sex, and so it was just me and Austin for ages with all of his friends, and when he got sick of batting them away, he asked if I wanted to go, and I was having such a good time with him that the thought of him leaving without me just kinda . . . sucked. And then one thing led to ano—”

“Woah. Okay. I don’t need the details of how you and my brother had sloppy drunk sex.”

“I’m sorry,” she says, burying her face in her hands. “You’ve been so adamant that you didn’t want us to do that, and the second I have a few drinks in me, I turned into a horny beast and couldn’t take my hands off him.”

“You don’t have anything to be sorry for,” I tell her. “I’m the last person who should be passing judgment, especially considering I’ve been preoccupied by Izaac’s dick for the past few weeks. But after seeing you two at Cherry the other night, I knew it was going to happen sooner or later. He couldn’t keep his hands off you.”

“No, he couldn’t,” she says, her cheeks flushing.

“I guess we should celebrate,” I tell her, raising my glass. “Welcome to the family.”

Becs stares at me, her face falling. “Huh? What are you talking about? We’re not dating. It was just one night. That’s it. I don’t intend on doing it again.”

“Oh, I know,” I say, a grin stretching across my face. “But give it time. It’s inevitable. You’ll soon realize how amazing he is, and you won’t be able to resist falling in love with him. Besides, if Austin was willing to risk the don’t touch my best friend rule that he’s lived by for the last twelve years in order to have just a taste of you, then he’s already falling for you.”

Horror crosses her features, truly thinking about what I just said. “Oh, fuck.”

“Yep.”

“Am I going to marry your brother?”
