Thirty seconds later, Vince makes his way down the hallway.

“Hey,” I say, suddenly feeling shy.

“Hey, yourself. What are we doing back—?”

I fuse my lips to his, cutting him off. He stumbles back but steadies himself. It takes him a moment before he kisses me back, his fingers lacing around my hips.

I try to focus on his lips. The taste of tequila and mint. I try to enjoy his hands gripping my waist. I try even fucking harder not to think about Tate.

When I pull away, his eyes flutter open. “I was not expecting that.”

“Neither was I,” I reply, my eyes locking on the dark, looming shadow in the distance. “Maybe we should do that again—”

“Mindy!” I pull back as Harry walks past Tate. “What the hell are you doing?”

Harry looks pissed—and sounds even more so. I have a feeling my little guard dog tattled on me. “Nothing. A customer was lost. I showed him where the bathroom was.”

“Last I checked, tour guide isn’t in your job description. This is a fucking bar, not a tourist attraction. Get back to work.” Then he storms off.

“Man, I’m sorry. I hope I didn’t get you in trouble.”

I force a smile, struggling not to show my fangs. “You didn’t. And even so, it was worth it. I do have to get back to work, though. I’ll see ya.” I slide around Vince and debate ramming my elbow into Tate’s stomach. Instead, I say loud enough for everyone outside the bathrooms to hear, “You should get going, Roomie. The pharmacy’s closing soon. Don’t want the herpes to spread.”

The silence in the car on the way home is deafening. Two enemies ready to battle. Fury crackles between us. When we pull up to the hotel, I jump out. As soon as he makes his way around the vehicle, I snap. “You crossed the line tonight.”

“I did my job.”

“You meddled. Meddling is not in your job description. Staying fucking scarce is!” I storm into the hotel and spin on my heel to face him. “You’re jealous because he’s a nice guy.”

“Pfft. He’s a fucking tool. You’re just too blind to see it. Or too busy playing games. You don’t even like that guy.”

“Yes, I do.” Done with this conversation, I give him my back and make my way to the elevator, the stomp of my heels hitting the marble satisfying. I slap the button to call for the elevator as Tate comes up beside me. “If you care to know, I find him super attractive. He’s funny, well-dressed, and a good—great—kisser.”

Tate throws his head back, letting out a cynical laugh. “I’m sure. You almost had me ’til the kissing part.”

I crane my neck to stare up at him. “Excuse me?”

“You heard me. That kiss was pathetic and staged. There was zero chemistry.”

“There was so much chemistry.” The doors open, and I storm inside. “You know where chemistry was lacking? With you. God! I can’t believe I made such a huge error in judgment and had sex with you. It’s going in my book of worst mistakes ever.”

“Whatever you tell yourself to sleep at night, babe.”

If it were possible, steam would be pouring out of my ears right now. “Do not call me babe.”

“We’re doing this again?”

“We’re doing it because you’re an ass!” The doors open, and I march out, leaving him to trail behind me. I dig through my purse and swipe the key.

“Fuckin’ stay,” he growls before heading inside. I would disobey him, but the last time I went first, my head was almost blown off. After a few minutes, he yells for me to come in, and I do so with fury in my step. “You’re done with work until we catch this guy.”

“Go fuck yourself.”

“Not on the job, sweetheart.”

He seriously has a death wish. “You know what? Fucking sounds perfect. I’m going to go upstairs and do what you never could: get me off. All while imagining Vince’s hands. His lips. His cock. And I’m going to moan his name when I come. Because he’s the one I can’t stop thinking about. You were just something to pass the time. Too bad you bored me. Goodnight.”

My heart thrashes in my chest as I go upstairs. When I reach the bedroom, I open the door and slam it closed. I collide with Tate’s palm and thrust back, crashing against the wall. I open my mouth, preparing for another fight, when his arms wrap around me and his lips crush against mine. I should shove him away. Slap him for thinking he has a right to kiss me. Since he has my head spinning between right and wrong, my hands claw up his neck and disappear into his hair, gripping him for dear life. The way he claims my hips, the heat of his skin against mine, I audibly moan, kissing him harder. We fall onto the bed, and I grunt at the pain in my shoulder.
