“I think so, too.” I leaned down to kiss her, slowing myself down enough to enjoy this moment.

I’d never given much thought to the first time I made love to a woman. With Svetlana, it had been a lifetime ago. With all the others, sex had been nothing but brief interludes of physical ecstasy that had nothing to do with the person I was with.

With Lucy, it was totally different, and I didn’t know why.

I couldn’t be bothered to worry about it, though. Not right now anyway.

Her fingers made their way into my hair again as we kissed and she spread her legs, inviting me in. I wanted to wait but when she arched her hips up, there was no way to hold out. I slowly pressed inside of her, inch by inch, until there was no more space between us. We were as close as two people could possibly be, our bodies completely in sync. Her beautiful blue eyes were glassy as our lips drifted together, barely touching.

“Fuckkk.” She drew out the word as she squirmed beneath me.

“Too much?” I asked, stroking my hand over the side of her face.

“Nooo. More. Fuck me, Konstantin.”

She didn’t have to ask me twice.

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Lucy

Maria laughed as she walked past me near the entrance to Morelli Brothers.

“You’ve got a glow, Lucy. Is it Mr. Italian Beef?”

I smiled, putting my phone back in my pocket. I’d stopped outside the bakery entrance when I got a text from Konstantin and replied to it. Now I was waiting for a response.

“It is,” I admitted. “Not that I’m not a modern woman who can’t glow without a man, but this time…yeah.”

“How was your Thanksgiving?” she asked me.

The glow she’d noticed was from my night with Kon, but the day had also been great. Sawyer’s house had been full of his teammates and their families, and I’d been part of the group. I’d been reminded that Sawyer wasn’t alone here. When the time came for me to leave, his teammates would still have his back.

“It was fantastic. Probably the best I’ve ever had. How was yours?”

She sighed. “Loud. But good. I love my family, even when they drive me crazy.” She reached for the handle to the bakery’s front door, but then paused. “Don’t tell my dad and uncle I was smoking. They think I quit.”

“Your secret is safe with me.”

I hadn’t even noticed her smoking because I’d been so immersed in my phone. Kon’s text had given me butterflies, and his next one did, too.

Kon: Yes. I can be there around 4.

I’d invited him over to help Sawyer and me eat leftovers from yesterday and then watch hockey. The fridge was overflowing. And even though we had leftover pie for days, I’d come to the bakery to get the brownies I was hooked on.

Lucy: See you then. And feel free to get handsy under the blanket during the movie.

Kon: I won’t be able to help myself.

The butterflies returned as I slipped my phone into my coat pocket. I’d only taken one step toward the bakery door when I was whipped backward by a powerful arm around my waist.

For a second, I was too stunned to react. But then I kicked and clawed as hard as I could, terror sending bile rising up my throat.

My feet didn’t find anything but air, but my nails sank into the flesh of the hand holding me, and the one clamped over my mouth. I writhed against the powerful hold as I was carried toward the alley next to the bakery.

I couldn’t let myself be taken into that alley. I could be raped or murdered and no one would even see it going down. Using both of my hands, I was able to get one of the man’s fingers between my teeth, and I bit down hard with every ounce of strength I had.

“Christ.” His growl became a cry of pain as I sank my teeth deeper, tasting the tang of his blood.

I’d break my teeth if I had to. I was going to fight him as hard as I could.

He dragged me closer to the alley, moving his hand from my mouth.

“Where is it, you bitch?” he asked, his voice gruff. “He knows you took copies of everything.”

I wasn’t surprised that Nate had sent this guy. How far was he willing to go to save himself?

It was hard to take a full breath with his arm clamped around me, but I screamed as loudly as I could, hooking a foot around the corner of the building and trying to keep him from getting me into the alley.

“Hey!” An older woman walking a dog had seen us from the other side of the street. “Get your hands off her!”

She ran across the street as my assailant pulled me around the corner of the building, my shoe falling to the ground. He shoved me against the brick wall so hard my teeth shook, then clamped his hand back over my mouth.
