The door closed, leaving me in darkness. But now I was wide awake, replaying her words over and over. Had there been a tiny pause, before sleep? Had I seen her glance down at my lower body?

Did she know that I’d been jacking off? Did she guess it was her I was jacking off to?

I groaned, punched my pillow into shape and lay down. I needed to get some sleep. A foreign trip. Just the two of us, alone on a plane for hours. God, this was going to be unbearable.

On the plus side, Poland was a stable country and whoever the killer was, he was here, in New York. The trip should be safe.

Right?

LORNA

I was leaning so low over my drawing board that the white paper was all I could see. The lines seemed to draw themselves and I could feel myself frowning as my pencil moved. It wasn’t a skyscraper or an apartment complex. This was smaller, modern but traditional, with lots of wood. It felt warm, safe…cozy.

A shadow fell across the white expanse. A rugged jaw, a Stetson. I spun around on my stool. JD! But why was he back in jeans? We had to leave for Poland any minute.

He marched closer. I saw his blue eyes narrow in lust and there was a sudden, silent detonation deep inside me, shockwaves rippling out to every part of my body. I was pinned by that stare, unable to get up or speak or do anything except breathe faster and faster—

He leaned down and put both hands on my waist, the heat throbbing from his palms through my turtleneck sweater. I sat there breathing hard, our faces inches apart. Then he let out a low growl and—

I groaned as his lips met mine. That hard upper lip spread me and I flowered open under him, then his tongue was seeking mine. His hands slid up my sides, pushing up my sweater as he pressed me back against my drawing board.

I glanced towards the glass walls of my office. Everyone will see! But then he pushed my bra up and lightly squeezed my breasts, thumbs brushing my nipples, and I didn’t care. “Don’t stop,” I panted against his mouth.

“Don’t stop what?” asked JD in a curious voice.

I opened my eyes. He was in his dark gray suit and the ceiling behind him was curved. And my drawing board had turned to soft leather under my back…

I blinked a few times and fought my way up through sleepy brain fog. We were on the jet. I must have dozed off and dreamed. And JD had heard me say—

“Don’t stop what?” he repeated. He was looming over me, arms braced against the ceiling, eyes crinkled as he frowned down at me. I sat there panting. My brain had flashed to hot embarrassment but my lips were still tingling from the dream kiss, my breasts still aching where his hands had squeezed them. Half of me wanted to curl up and die, the other half wanted to grab the collar of his shirt and pull him down on top of me.

“Stirring,” I said, not very convincingly. “I was watching you mix concrete.”

JD raised one eyebrow and pinned me with a look, just like in the dream. Those blue eyes burned…oh God, did he know?

Then he nodded and turned away. “Sorry I woke you.” He pointed to the window beside me and I realized that that’s why he’d been leaning over me, to raise the shutter. “We’re landing in a few minutes.”

Already? “What time is it?”

“About one in the morning, our time.”

My brain fog started to clear. That’s right, we’d got on the plane at five in the evening. I’d wanted to leave earlier but I’d been caught up in meetings all day. Plus, Paige’s mother had broken her leg so Paige had to go see her which meant I’d had to arrange for Cody to stay at a friend’s house for the night. It was about an eight- hour flight to Poland: no wonder I’d dozed off, it was the middle of the night. But then how come a sunrise was blasting me? I shielded my eyes “What time is it here?”

“Six in the morning,” JD said apologetically.

I groaned. I’d only had a few hours of sleep and now I was about to start a whole new day. I wasn’t even sure what day it was. I ran my hands through my hair, trying to make myself look as if I hadn’t slept in my suit. “How do I look?” I asked, without much hope.

JD’s gaze swept slowly down my body, the heat of it soaking into me. I caught my breath, every inch of me waking and standing to attention. It felt like my clothes were disintegrating, leaving me nakedly exposed, skin throbbing. But it felt reverent as well, his eyes staying on my lips and eyes for as long as my breasts and hips. “You look great,” he said at last.
