“Who says it can’t?”

“Good point.”

The time draws near to do what I’ve wanted to do for some time. The thing I’ve never been more certain of in my life.

It’s a little crazy, yes.

But there are songs about this crazy little thing called love.

And I understand them more than ever when it comes to Cadence.

CADENCE

That was amazing.

Like, I knew it was supposed to be good. I’m sheltered, yes, but I’m still a girl in the twenty-first century. That sort of thing leaks out to everyone, even the most virginal of preachers’ daughters.

And the thing is? Looking at Carter, even after he’s given me such a wonderful bit of release, I still want more. I’m still hungry for more. Goddamn, I want anything and everything he can give me, and I want him to give it to me until he literally can’t any longer, or my body is so sore that I have no choice but to stop.

And I want more than man-on-top missionary too. I want the things that my father’s supposed to condemn, things that people have tried to outlaw, things where two people use their entire bodies to please one another.

The dam of curiosity has been broken, and I look at Carter as the sort of man who’s going to help me explore things.

We’re still in one another’s arms, breathing heavily, simply enjoying the powerful presence of what we just enjoyed with one another. Even lying here with him would be more than enough for me before this moment, but maybe I’m just greedy. Maybe one sin has given way to so many more.

“Carter,” I say, my voice weak and wavering, trying to regain my energy. And a bit of confidence too. I’m worrying that maybe I got him wrong again. Maybe he doesn’t want anything else in bed besides the most basic of things.

“What’s up?” he replies, stroking my hair.

“I want more,” I whisper.

“Do you, now? Even after that?”

“I want so much more.”

“Like what?”

I gulp, thinking of how to phrase it. “I want to taste you, Carter. And I want you to lick me. I want to explore so many things. So many filthy, sexual, yet oh-so-wonderful things.”

There’s a definite look of surprise on his face. It softens to a smile. “Oh, the things I want to do with you, Cadence. I’m so glad to hear that you’re more than willing to explore each other and the many, many things that’ll bring both of us joy.”

He runs his hand down my body, everything still so damn sensitive. I gasp as he runs a playful finger over my clit.

“There’s something I want to do before I feast on your pussy though, Cadence. Something very important, something that’s been eating at me all day.”

I raise an eyebrow. “And what would that be?”

He takes a big breath and stands up from the sofa. He goes over to his slacks and picks them up, going through his pockets. Did he need to show me something on his phone?

“When I first laid eyes on you years ago, I saw a beautiful woman. The cutest thing I ever saw, and the sexiest thing I ever saw. But you were always off limits to me, Cadence. You’re a preacher’s daughter, after all. You’re the embodiment of goodness and virginity. And me? I’m some fuck-up. I feel like I only have a job because of my father, and I spend half my free time in the drunk tank. I’m an aimless mess. Someone who never felt fit to be loved, only the memory of his mother to remind him it was possible.”

“None of that last part is remotely true, Carter.”

“Yeah, yeah, I’m realizing that now. And I think your goodness is what I needed to teach me that lesson. Today, when I was performing in front of the whole church, I laid my eyes on you, and you watched me back. It was then I knew that this, what we have between us, is undeniably true. That it has to be. That you and I are meant to be together for the rest of our lives, Cadence.”

He turns, and there’s a small velvet box in his hand. I gasp when I see it. Is he about to do what I think he’s going to do?

Carter drops to a knee. “Make it certain, Cadence. Marry me. Let’s start our journey as man and woman together. Let’s build a relationship. Love one another. Start a family. Have one another to lean on and support for the rest of our days. Marry me, Cadence. Make me the happiest man alive.”

I’m stunned to see what’s in front of me. I don’t know what to say at first, even though the answer is oh so clear.

“I’ve already done the traditional things. I’ve asked your father for permission. He’s... oddly for it. Your mother has given me her stamp of approval and that’s enough for him.”
