Keene grunted as if he was highly satisfied with that information.

The woman now behind me, silently eating her food, remained silent, but I knew she’d heard every word and was retaining all that information like a sponge.

“Well, your dinner is damn fine. I can’t wait to see what you have in store for us tomorrow,” Keene admitted. “What do you plan on doing for breakfast?”

Just as Keene’s next question had been asked, red and blue lights started to fill the space.

Woodenly, I turned to find the sheriff and his minions barreling through the common space, which had been set up around the food trailer.

Sheriff Bright came to a stop with handcuffs dangling from his hands.

“Where is Ms. Singh?” Bright asked furiously.

There was a very long moment of silence before Keene said, “You’ll have to be more specific, Sheriff.”

Keene took another bite of his food as he waited for Bright to stop sputtering and come up with a more concrete answer.

As far as I was aware, there were at least six of them, so Keene’s question wasn’t rude or obstructive in any way.

That’s obviously not how Bright took it, though.

“Deputies,” Bright stiffened his spine and crossed his arms over his chest, dropping his handcuffs in the process. “Arrest him for obstruction.”

The deputies stood there as if they couldn’t quite understand or comprehend what had been said and then one of them replied, “Um, Sheriff Bright, I think he truly is asking which sister.”

Bright’s angry face got red underneath the harsh floodlights above his head. “Do not question me! Get in there, Sparrenger!”

Sparrenger shifted from foot to foot, then did what he was told by walking up to Keene.

“It’s okay, son,” Keene said as he finished off his food and handed the plate back to me.

I took it, knowing without a doubt that the woman behind me was about to be spending the night in jail. She wouldn’t be able to get out before the morning because it was too late for anything to get done tonight. And that was hoping that the lawyer that was presiding over the case wasn’t as dumb as the sheriff.

The deputy reluctantly handcuffed Keene and then stood there unsurely, trying to figure out what to do next.

“Can you hand me that Coke?” Keene whispered.

I had to keep the laughter off my face as I waited for the next part of the drama to play out.

“I’m gonna go pee really quick,” Simi sighed. “Did they get your water hooked up yet?”

“Yes,” I answered quietly.

“Okay, be right back,” she grumbled.

I watched her go in her flashy red uniform for the night, a sparkly red number that was even tighter than what she’d worn to the sheriff’s department the first time.

“Who’s going to show me to Ms. Singh?” Bright bellowed.

The sisters came out of the shadows one by one, all saying, “I’m Ms. Singh.”

The toilet in the back room of my trailer flushed, then Simi appeared dragging her feet. “I really, really want to take a shower and change my clothes.”

I eyed her up and down, then said, “If you want to wear one of my shirts and a pair of sweats, I have my bag right there.” I jerked my chin toward the door where a closet was held.

She groaned. “I’d kill to change out of this.”

“Then go for it,” I said. “Sweats and a shirt, right on top. I wore them last night.”

She walked to the door, dragged my bag out, then said, “They smell good.”

Then I watched with not a little amount of curiosity as she changed right there in the open, though nobody knew she was there but me.

Only when she was fully dressed, all but swallowed in my clothes, did she walk up to me and say, “Come bail me out in the morning, please?”

I tucked a loose curl behind her ear.

Most of it had been pulled back into a bun, but one stubborn lock had escaped and sprung right back into place after I touched it.

I looked down into her eyes and said, “I’ll get Stratt and Mac on it as soon as possible.”

She grumbled under her breath, then turned woodenly to walk toward the door.

I caught my shirt that was billowing on her body and tugged her back to me.

She turned, and I planted a kiss on her upturned lips before saying, “Go knock ’em dead, tiger.”

“Rawr,” she said in the cutest voice ever.

Chuckling, I let her go and had already pulled up Stratt’s personal number—something I’d asked for this morning because I had a distinct feeling I was going to need it—before she’d fully made it outside.

I had him on the line when I saw her make her way up to the sheriff’s right side.

“I am not playing this fucking game!” Sheriff Bright bellowed. “Give me Mrs. Singh.”

“You are literally staring at five Ms. Singhs,” Simi placed emphasis on Ms. “But at this point, since they’re not doing it for you, maybe I will.”
