I shrugged.

“I don’t know. He just said he’s afraid that he put her in danger. He did call me from jail,” I told them.

Benjamin shot up to his feet, the air of his motion knocking out Rhett’s house of cards.

“Oh, damn it,” Rhett sighed as he stared at the pile of cards.

“Jail?” Benjamin barked. “You took a job from a criminal?”

I put my hands up defensively as Benjamin and I faced off. He was touchy when it came to criminals, but I needed him to focus on the job instead of his past.

“His lawyer will send all of the information soon, but I’ve already got the money. He’s desperate for his daughter to be protected, so I say we do what we do best and help out an innocent girl,” I said as my eyes shifted around to everyone.

“I’m down,” Rhett replied as he carefully leaned two cards against each other.

“Me too. It’ll be an easy job,” Akio assured Benjamin. “How much trouble could she possibly be in?”

Benjamin scoffed as he shook his head.

“That depends on how much trouble her father is in,” he replied as his eyes burned into mine.

The corner of my mouth curled up slightly as I held my hand out to him.

“It’s a team effort. I can’t do it without you,” I told him as I lifted my eyebrows at him. I understood his concerns, but the team wasn’t complete without him. He was a brutal fighter and one of the bravest people I knew.

Benjamin stared down at my hand for a moment before smirking and shaking it.

“Damn right. I’ve had to save all of your asses multiple times!” he claimed, inciting laughter and protests from around the room.

“Remember when you got locked in that storage closet by that crazy fan?” Rhett chuckled. “And I had to come rescue you?”

“Last time I guard a popstar,” Benjamin scoffed as he walked closer to Rhett, reaching out to mess up his brown, slightly shaggy hair. He plopped back down on the couch and crossed his arms behind his head. “Let’s hope this girl doesn’t give us any trouble.”

“Her father just got arrested. She’s probably in shambles,” I said as I checked my phone to see a new email from someone named John Kester, who I guessed was the lawyer. I read through the email, gathering details about the girl we were watching and where she was located. There wasn’t much to go off of, but I assumed Harold only wanted me to know what I needed to know to protect his daughter. “We’ll start tomorrow.”

“She’ll be okay for a night?” Akio asked me.

I nodded and pocketed my phone.

“She’s in an apartment right now, so we’ll head out in the morning and introduce ourselves,” I told them, hearing snickers around the room. I rolled my eyes at them. “I’m sure she’ll be friendly. She’s a year younger than Rhett.”

Rhett’s eyebrows lifted in interest for a second. When I shot him a warning glare, he looked back down at his house of cards. One of my big rules was no fraternizing with the clients. Guarding people from danger and psychos was already difficult enough. We didn’t need to make things more complicated by getting emotional.

“Great. We’re dealing with a socialite. They’re as bad as popstars,” Benjamin muttered as he leaned his head back against the armrest of the couch and closed his eyes.

“Have some sympathy,” I said sternly before turning to the others. “All of you get some rest. I want this job done right tomorrow.”

“Aye-aye, captain,” Rhett replied, saluting me while keeping his eyes on his cards.

“See you in the morning,” Akio said as he opened his book back up.

Benjamin merely grunted.

I headed back out to the gym to finish my workout, feeling a new wave of motivation. Work had been slightly dry lately. I was grateful for peaceful times when people felt safe, but it was also nice to have something to focus on.

Now, I had to keep my eyes on a younger, richer woman who was on her own for the first time. She would probably be so nervous that she would cooperate without resistance, which would make our job a lot easier. At the end of the day, we just needed her to be safe, and she would realize that.

After stripping off my damp shirt, I lay on the workout bench and secured my fingers around the bar of the barbell, moving it off the stand. I released my breath as I lifted the barbell above my head, holding it steady. Heat and sweat overtook my body as I continued my reps.

Harold mentioned that he feared his daughter was in danger, but what was the threat? Who did he get involved with? Typically, when rich guys got in trouble, they messed with the wrong type of businessmen. There were gangs and crime mobs in this city, and I wasn’t looking forward to going toe to toe with any of them.
