Benjamin looked up at me and cocked an eyebrow.

“You okay?” he asked.

I nodded quickly, not wanting him to know that I was thinking about his head being buried between my thighs. I hadn’t ever been touched like that before, but I longed to know what it felt like. I decided to distract him and myself by shifting the conversation.

“Any words of advice for the next time I’m attacked? Some special moves I should know?” I asked him. Something told me I needed to be prepared for next time. Things were getting serious.

Benjamin reached up and tapped my throat, the side of my neck, below my ear around my jaw, and my nose.

“All those are good spots. It only takes around seven pounds of pressure to break someone’s nose,” he replied. He then shifted his hand to press his fingertips against the spot just under my ribcage. “The kidneys are around here. They’re a good spot to hit too, along with the lower stomach.”

“And the groin?” I asked with a smirk. Maybe that was a cheap spot, but there was no cheating when it came to fighting for my life. I would only take groin shots if that meant keeping me alive.

Benjamin cracked an amused grin and nodded.

“And the groin. You’ll undoubtedly be smaller than whoever you’re righting. Do whatever you can to keep their arms from wrapping around you or from taking you down to the ground. Your best bet is to strike at those spots fast and move away just as quickly,” he told me.

I nodded as I listened to him. As expected, he had some great tips, and I had a feeling that he was probably the best brawler out of the group. He had the bold attitude for it, which prompted my next question.

“Why were you so annoyed that you had to protect me?” I asked him.

Benjamin’s eyes lowered for a moment.

“I only became a bodyguard a few years ago. Before that, I was in prison for being a car thief,” he admitted to me before rising to his feet. He pressed his fingers into my back around my shoulder blade, trying to find where I was sore at. When I winced, he drew his hand away. “I’ll get ice packs for you.”

I reached out and took his hand, stopping him from leaving. I wanted to hear more about him. He was so mysterious, so alluring. I wanted to know what he was like outside of being a bodyguard.

“Why did you become a bodyguard?” I replied.

Benjamin sat beside me, our thighs brushing.

“Well, I can still beat up people without getting in trouble,” he said with a light smirk before shrugging. “It’s a less risky way of making a living. Keeps me out of trouble.”

I smiled a little as I peered at him, seeing him start to relax around me. I had a feeling he didn’t tell many people about his past, but we were going to be stuck together for a while. We might as well get properly acquainted.

“Will I get you in trouble?” I asked in a quiet voice.

“Your father’s crimes and ties to someone like Deviau made me wary. I try to stay away from anything that can put me back in prison, even if I’m not involved. It’s just safer that way,” Benjamin explained.

My face softened as I nodded in understanding. No wonder he tried to distance himself from me. I could’ve been a bomb walking right into his life that he worked so hard to fix.

“I’m sorry,” I told him, wishing my father’s actions didn’t make him so nervous to even be involved with me.

Benjamin smirked a little and shook his head.

“Nothing to be sorry for. I don’t scare that easily,” he assured me as he patted my thigh, letting his hand linger on my knee.

I stared at his hand, wishing it would go higher up my thigh. Having sex with Andrew had tampered with something in my brain, opening my mind up to so many possibilities, so much desire that I could hardly contain myself. Maybe it was also because a rugged, mysterious man just opened up to me while looking after my wounds. It was intimate in a way I wasn’t used to, but I liked it. A lot.

“Good. I wouldn’t want to run you off,” I said as I placed my hand over his.

Benjamin’s eyes shifted to the closed door before moving back to me.

“Can’t say I’m surprised you cracked our strict leader. He has a policy against getting close to clients,” he murmured as he rubbed circles against my knee with his thumb.

I swallowed hard as our shoulders pressed together, our bodies leaning closer. My heart hammered in my chest so heavily that it was hard to breathe.

“I didn’t want to die a virgin,” I joked with a wry smile.
