Ford gets Ollie’s attention, leaving Beau and me with Issi. “Issi, he’s beautiful.”

She lifts him up. “Do you want to hold him?”

I gasp again, putting my hand to my heart. “Are you sure? I can wait until he’s bigger. I’m fine just looking at him.”

Issi laughs. “Don’t be ridiculous. Plus, remember you’re going to be holding him while I work out. That was the deal. You might as well get some practice in now.”

I can’t even laugh at her joke. I take the tiny bundle in my arms, and all I can do is stare down at him. From the jostling, he’s opened his eyes, and he’s looking up at me. His eyes are a light blue, and I can’t look away.

Choking back a sob, I tell her, “He’s perfect, you guys. My goodness, he just steals your heart right out of your chest.”

I don’t know how much times passes by, but eventually, LJ starts to get restless. I give him back to Lucas, and he stands next to his brother. Beau is staring at me, his mouth hanging open, but he closes it when Lucas puts the baby in his arms. “All right, big bro. Your turn.”

Beau doesn’t hesitate. He takes his nephew in his arms and stares down at him. I can’t help it. Instantly, my ovaries feel as if they are going to explode.

A baby in Beau’s arms causes my whole body to heat.

He looks up from the baby and stares right at me. Issi is talking to me about something, and I should feel bad for not paying attention, but I can’t look away from my husband. He sees it. There’s no way he doesn’t.

He clears his throat and then looks down at his nephew in his arms. “He’s perfect, bub.”

Lucas is looking at the baby proudly, and I turn to Issi. “I’m so sorry. I’m listening.”

Issi laughs softly and reaches for my hand. “Oh, I know exactly what you were doing.”

My face heats, and I can feel the people in the room looking at me, but luckily no one else seems to know just what happened.

Beau and I stay for another few minutes until the nurse comes in and runs everyone out. After hugging, we all go outside the hospital.

“We’re going to get lunch at Red’s. You guys want to join us?”

The question comes from Huddy, and I look up at Beau. He answers his brother without even looking at me. “No, I think we’re going to head home.”

We hug everyone again, and after extra hugs to Ollie, Beau and I get in the car and drive in the opposite direction. “We could have gone to eat with them if you wanted. I really am feeling fine.”

Beau shrugs. “Nope, we need to go home. I’ll feed you there.”

My forehead creases as I gaze out the front window. Beau is acting weird, but I just lay my head back on the seat and watch the scenery go by.

He doesn’t say anything else except to ask me how my head is doing.

“It’s fine. I really am good.”

Is that why he didn’t want to go eat with his family?

When we get home, we walk into the house, and he grabs my hand. “Come with me.”

I walk with him up the stairs, and as soon as we’re in the bedroom, he releases his hold on me. “Go grab your birth control.”

My mouth drops, and I close it back. I go into the bathroom and grab the small case and then go back in the bedroom. “It’s here. I promise, I take it every day. I just forgot this morning, but I’ll take it now.”

Beau grabs the package from my hand. “Wait… can we talk first?”

I stare at the way he’s gripping the birth control in his hand. “Uh, sure… we can talk.”

He tosses the case on the nightstand. “I want you to stop taking them. Is it safe to just stop taking them or do we need to go talk to a doctor?”

My eyes round. “You want me to stop taking them?”

His jaw is pulled tight. It’s almost like he’s barely hanging on. “Yes. More than anything, yes.”

I shake my head, unsure. “Beau…”

He cuts me off. “I saw you, baby. I saw you holding LJ. Don’t lie to me… don’t lie to yourself and say you’re not ready.”

I jut my chin at him. “I told you I was ready… it’s you that I’m not sure is ready. Two weeks ago, you were doing everything you could to make sure we didn’t get pregnant. Two weeks ago, I thought you never wanted kids.”

He rams his hand through his hair, causing it to stick up everywhere. “Two weeks ago, I was an idiot. Seeing you with LJ in your arms… I want that. I want you to hold our baby in your arms, and I don’t want to wait any longer.”
