Kai pressed his lips into a hard, thin line and stared at Dev for several seconds. He could almost hear the wheels turning, could almost guess that Kai was considering that if he told Dev that Jake was in trouble, Dev would go to Colorado without a fight. But did he really believe that to be true?

“No,” he said in a hoarse voice. “The anger is all directed at you. Justin and Gabriel can continue to watch over him and keep him safe.”

Dev wanted to wrap himself around Kai and kiss him until their lips were sore. If the man could be honest with him when it hurt so much, then it felt like there was nothing they couldn’t handle.

“Right. So, we keep this here, between us. We bring him here to us and set a trap.”

“Trap? How? We don’t know who this is or how he’s getting his information.”

“Not yet, but we will. I don’t want to risk this fucker going into hiding and leaving us in limbo for months, if not years. That kind of fanaticism we saw, that doesn’t fade. This asshole will wait and keep hunting me. I want this done. Jake deserves a normal life. You owe me dates.”

Kai blinked at him for a moment, his mouth bobbing but no words coming out. “You still want to date me? To try…”

“Yes. Of course I do. This asshole doesn’t have anything to do with us.”

Kai seemed to stare at him, emotions warring in his eyes, as if he didn’t know what to do or say next. Dev got it. Their world was teetering on a knife blade. One wrong step and they were going to lose everything.

But Dev had already been there. He’d lost the love of his life. He’d very nearly lost his son and the life they built together. It was only through hard work and trusting some amazing friends that he’d gotten at least some of that life back.

Now as he stood there with Kai, he could see something very wonderful being dangled in front of his fingertips. He just had to be smart and carefully reach for it. There was no telling if he and Kai could actually make a relationship work, but he wanted to give it a try. He didn’t want everything to fall apart at the hands of a crazed killer. If it failed, it would fail because they weren’t a good match.

Dev wasn’t at all ready to believe that, though.

“Okay,” Kai finally agreed. “We’ll stay here, and Jake stays at camp.”

“Wonderful.”

“I’m not leaving your side for a second.”

If Kai thought he was making this unbearable, he was horribly mistaken. “I like this plan,” Dev nearly purred. There were definitely perks to having a sexy assassin acting as his bodyguard.

“I’m also training you in self-defense and how to use a gun. You are getting your own gun.”

Dev’s nose wrinkled at that pronouncement. He didn’t like guns, and certainly never wanted one in the house with him and Jake. He’d had one while they were on the run purely out of necessity, but he’d happily left it in Colorado with Justin when all the insanity was over.

Of course, while he might not like it, he really couldn’t argue with Kai. It did make some sense. If something happened where he and Kai were separated, Dev needed to be able to protect himself.

Stepping closer, Dev wrapped his arms tightly around Kai’s waist and stared up at the man. He looked absolutely wrung out from the events of the past few days. It was more than rest he needed. Kai needed to finally shed some of this stress.

“This is an excellent plan,” Dev murmured. He pressed slow kisses up Kai’s neck, humming happily when Kai’s shoulders relaxed a fraction. “Would you like to hear one of my plans?”

“Of course.”

“I think we should strip out of our clothes, climb into this bed, and you fuck me until we can’t remember our names.”

The first hint of a smile in nearly sixteen hours spread across Kai’s lips. “Really?”

Dev leaned up a little and nipped at Kai’s earlobe. “Make me yours.”

Kai didn’t hesitate, wrapping him up in strong arms and capturing Dev’s mouth as if he’d been starving for his touch. A low moan escaped Dev and he simply sank into the man, wanting everything he could give. He wanted to forget about what he’d seen in the condo and lose himself in their hunger.

They kissed over and over, an urgent tangling of tongues, while hands wandered over each other’s bodies. It was the same hunger Dev had experienced while they were in San Francisco, but there was a new harshness, an extra bite to Kai’s fingers, as if he hadn’t completely shaken the fear that had gripped him since last night.

Dev slowed the kisses, pulling away enough to sneak his hands between their bodies. He carefully slipped each button free before sliding his hands under Kai’s shirt to caress his amazing chest. He could spend an evening happily exploring this man’s body and still not have learned all he wanted about him.
